Bardin, the Celestial with cartouche printed `To the Rev. / NEVIL MASKELYNE D.D., F.R.S. / Astronomer Royal / This New British Celestial Globe / Containing the Positions of nearly 6000 Stars, Clusters, Nebulae, Planetary / Nebulae, & Correctly computed & laid down for the year 1800 from the latest observati / -ons and discoveries by Dr. Maskelyne, Dr. Herfchel, The Rev. Mr. Wollation / So Respectfully Dedicated / by his most obedient hble. servants / W. & T. M. Bardin`, the Terrestrial apparently without cartouche, each comprised of two sets of twelve hand coloured gores applied to the sphere with a brass meridian, the horizon rings with engraved paper calendar and zodiac scales, supported on matching mahogany stands with four quadrants, turned columns and tripod bases with spade feet, the spheres 18in. A 19th century fireman’s leather helmet, with front and back peaks, brass binding to the front peak and ear to ear band with diamond shaped studs at either end, integral comb with brass ventilator hole to the front, leather liner, basically GC (some wear, leather crazed and bubbled); a Vic fireman’s blue coat, made for a child, red bands to collar and cuffs, brass shoulder scales and buttons bearing helmet and crossed axes, label of Elkington Gravesend inside, and a matching pair of pigskin gloves with brass studs. Aylesbury, Francis Wheeler, Skidmore’s mule Halfpenny, 1797, Justice seated right, holding sword and scales, rev. FW cypher in script capitals, surmounted by the crest of a swan and encircled by wreath of oak and palm, edge engrailed, 9.08g/6h (DH 5; Preston-Morley 1020, this piece). Obverse a little off-centre as usual, otherwise brilliant and practically as struck with much original colour, extremely rare; only six specimens known to the cataloguer, two of which are in institutions Provenance: P.J. J.B. Dancer, Manchester An oak stick barometer, the aslant bone dials having two vernier scales showing ‘10 A.M. Yesterday’ and ‘10 A.M. Today’ with the left hand side engraved with the maker’s name ‘J.B. Dancer, Manchester’, the right hand scale engraved ‘Add one tenth for each ninety feet above the sea’, both with wind indication, with a bone thermometer set within the trunk, the oak case having a castellated top and Gothic carved mouldings, height 100cm. * John Benjamin Dancer is recorded as working at 13, Cross Street, Manchester, from before 1841 until after 1845 and was ‘By appointment to Her Majesties Commissionaires’.

J J Hicks, London, a walnut weather station, the walnut case, with front opening, containing an eight day fusee timepiece with the silvered 7 inch round dial engraved with black Roman numerals, subsidiary seconds dial and the maker’s name ‘J.J. Hicks, 8 Hatton, London’, alongside a barometer drum turned with power from the clock movement, a signed thermometer with silvered dial and barometer scale to the side, and a barometer with the 7 inch dial signed by the maker as before and engraved with scales, height 42cm, width 69cm. * James Joseph Hicks was born in Ross Carbery, Co. Cork, Ireland moving to London where he was apprenticed to L.P. Casella. The Hicks business became one of the largest in the country and was at 8, Hatton Garden, London from 1861 until 1884 when the company enlarged by taking over the adjoining premises. He was a staunch Catholic and presented a number of meteorological instruments to the Vatican. He was made a Knight Commander of St. Gregory.
