India, 19th-early 20th century AD. Cast bronze tribal statue of a dragon with applied spines and three holes on the back, applied pieces of bronze to represent scales, open mouth with applied teeth and eyes. 621 grams, 30cm (11 3/4"). Acquired on the London art market in the late 1980s. Possibly a ritual vessel where liquid would be poured into the the body via the three holes in the back and then poured out of the mouth of the dragon as a libation. Made in the Bastar region, Central India. [No Reserve] Fine condition.
Nepal, 19th-early 20th century AD. Cast bronze horn in the shape of a Makara; the animal has an open mouth with elephant's trunk above and tusks to either side; there are two horns on the head and the body is decorated with scales and bands of floral motifs; towards the mouthpiece, and near the neck, is a small ring for attaching a carrying rope. 320 grams, 49cm long (19 1/4"). From an old London collection, formed in the 1980s. A Makara is a mythical animal associated with water and fertility. Horns such as this are used in religious processions. An 18th Century French brass Butterfield type pocket sun dial with compass, the elongated octagonal body having three hour scales for 40, 45 and 50 degree angles with a bird design gnomon, the inner if the item marked LeFebure A Paris, rear of the item having latitudes for seventeen cities, housed in a fitted case, length 6.5cm. Case A/F.
An early 18th century carved stone figure depicting Justice:, the neoclassical figure with scales inverted and sword drooped, emblematic to show justice had been served, formerly over the doorway to the condemned cells of the old Bailey, 85cm. high. *Notes. After the Great Fire of London, the Old Bailey was rebuilt by Sir Christopher Wren and this figure stood above the doorway leading to the condemned cells. It escaped destruction when the Gordon Rioters set fire to the building in 1780.
