3rd century AD. 198-200 AD, Septimius Severus, military mint on the Danube border, 'limes' issue. Obv: L SEPT SEV AVG IMP XI PART MAX legend with laureate head right. Rev: AEQVITATI AVGG, Aequitas standing left, holding scales and cornucopia; Gordian III, imitative. Obv: IMP GORDIANVS PIVS FEL AVG legend with laureate and draped bust right. Rev: IOVI PROPVGNTAORI legend with Jupiter walking right, hurling thunderbolt and holding eagle. 2.71, 2.24 grams. Limes version of RIC IV-i, 122c; Cohen 21; Sear 6259 variant (obverse legend)/unofficial dies. See Wildwinds.com (first coin"). The coin of Gordian III is likely the product of an ancient counterfeiter; the reverse type of Jove Propugnatori was not struck for Gordian III in any official Roman or Limes mint for any denomination and, in addition, there are two errors in the reverse legend, which is grammatically incorrect, instead of IOVI PROPVGNATORI or IOVIS PROPVGNATOR legends which had previously been used for Severus Alexander (but with Jupiter in a different attitude; see RIC 235-236 for IOVI PROPVGNATORI and RIC 240-241 for IOVIS PROPVGNATOR with Jupiter walking left, holding thunderbolt. [No Reserve] Good fine.
