A RARE ENGLISH BRASS QUADRANT BY JOHN BIRD the brass plate of lattice framework with fixed and pivoted telescopes, two scales divided into 90° and 96°, vernier, clamp and micrometer tangent screw, on columnar shaft with radial feet and levelling screws, 60.5cm h, fitted mahogany case with further parts and original accessories including a miniature spanner, brass handles, with contemporary iron double-column stand, c1760 John Bird (w. 1745, d.1776) was the most highly regarded London maker of astonomical instruments, especially the quadrant, in the mid 18th century. Jean Bernouilli (Lettres Astronomiques…, Berlin 1771) observed of Bird's portable quadrant that "one always receives these instruments equipped with everything that belongs to them…" The present example, which is in entirely original state but requires repair and conservation because of the effects of long term storage in damp conditions, is of the exact type for which Bird charged the high price of 35gns. A LATE 19TH CENTURY FRENCH PATTERN POLISHED-BRASS GRAPHOMETER, signed Stanley, Great Turnstile, Holborn, London on the rotating alidade with fixed sights and vernier scales, the semi-circular frame engraved 0° - 180 (x2) and the inset compass with silvered scale, the edge-bar needle with jewelled pivot-cap and clamp, the base with two additional sights and bubble level, with ball and socket tripod or staff mounting arranged so that the instrument may be used in the vertical and horizontal planes, in oak case with iron carrying handle, 11 3/4" wide. A 19TH CENTURY POLISHED-BRASS THEODOLITE, (dismantled); signed on the horizontal plate Schmalcalder 399 Strand London, the telescope with rack and pinion focusing, bubble level mounted over the vertical half circle with Y supports and hinged clamps (one missing), raised on inverted V-frames incorporating tangent-screw fine adjustment, compass box and fore-aft bubble level, (cross bubble missing), the compass with plain iron needle with jewelled cap, the horizontal plate with twin silvered vernier scales to read against the chamfered silvered horizontal circle, with part base and tripod attachment (a lot). A Pretty 19th Century Copenhagen Teapot. The bulbous body moulded with a shoulder band of basket weave and wrythen flutes leading down to the base, painted with bouquets of flowers either side and scattered in floral sprigs. The spout decorated with a collar of gilt edged feathers with gilded scales to the handle and a floral knop surmounting the lid, 4½ ins (11.5 cms) in height.
A Small Regency Mahogany Chiffonier. The mirrored back with egg & baluster knopped brass columns supporting a mahogany shelf. The top having a reeded edge above a single cross banded drawer flanked by anthemion appliqués. The door with a brass lattice grille backed in green fabric and ornamented with rosette studs. The pilasters adorned with unusual Egyptian heads surmounting gilded tapering columns of imbricated scales leading down to human monpods. Standing 49½ ins (126 cms) in height, 26½ ins (67 cms) wide, 16½ ins (42 cms) deep.
