- Literatur: Stan Augarten, "Bit by Bit, An Illustrated History of Computers", 1984, S. 22-30. - Die hier angebotene Maschine ist eine sehr originalgetreue Kopie aus dem Jahr 2011. Start Price: EUR 3000 Zustand: (2/2)Working Replica of the Six-Digit "Pascaline Calculator"With lacquered-brass case, spoked digit-wheels with engraved white-metal scales corresponding (right to left) to: "Nombre Cimple", "dixaines", "Centaines", "mille", "dixaines de mille" and "Cantainnes de mille", sliding rule for changing display from addition to subtraction, brass-framed interior mechanism with six axles each carrying three lantern gears and an inscribed paper-covered drum for the display, on wood plinth with four feet and hinged flap, width 12 in. (31,5) x depth 51/8 in. (13 cm) x height 3 in. (7,8 cm). - Note: Blaise Pascal (1623-1662), mathematician, physicist and philosopher, is credited with the invention of the first mechanical calculator capable of addition and subtraction. His father, Étienne Pascal, was a lawyer and a judge in the tax court who assumed a new position as tax commissioner for Upper Normandy, based in Rouen, in 1639. France had declared war with Spain four years earlier, leading the French government to renege on part of its internal debt and to increase taxation. Étienne - assisted by his son - was under pressure to keep accurate account of the rising tax levies with only the help of counting boards. In 1642 the 19-year old Blaise began designs for a machine that would simplify his father's work. As a reviewer wrote in Le Figaro Littéraire in 1947, "the calculating machine was born of a filial love flying to the rescue of the tax man". - Pascal's first design was for a five-digit calculator; he later refined his principal by creating six and eight-digit machines. Due to the difficulty in cutting toothed gears accurately, Pascal used lantern-type gears formed by pinned wheels that could turn in one direction only. - His design was simultaneously simple and brilliant; the Pascaline could add and subtract two numbers directly and multiply and divide by repetition. The six digit-wheels on the outer case are connected to axles that each carry three lantern gears and a paper-covered drum with inscribed figures. The digit-wheels were rotated by a stylus. For addition, a sliding rule located on the number display was pushed upwards for digits from 0-9. For subtraction, the rule was pushed downwards for digits from 9-0. - The Pascaline was also revolutionary for including digital carry-over. Whenever a ten was carried, a ratchet mounted between the gears, pushed the adjacent gear around a notch, so that the display moved one digit higher. Unfortunately for its operator, a design flaw meant that the ratchets were inclined to jam - perhaps one reason why production of the Pascaline was not financially successful at 100 Livres apiece. It was, however, a mathematical sensation, leading Pascal's friend, the poet Charles Vion Dalibray, to compose a sonnet in its honor: - "... Calculation was the action of a reasonable man, And now your inimitable skill. Has given the power to the slowest of wits". - Pascal accordingly applied for a privilege (the 17th century term for a patent), which was only eventually granted in 1649, after its inventor had presented the issuing officer, Chancellor Seguier, with an 8-digit calculator of his own. - The total production of the Pascaline is not known, however, researchers estimate that no more than 20 examples were produced, of which 9 are known today. It was, nevertheless, an historic achievement, not least for demonstrating "that an apparently intellectual process like arithmetic could be performed by a machine". Its introduction led to the development of mechanical calculators in Europe and, eventually, to the invention of the very first microprocessor, the "Intel 4004", for the "Busicom 141-PF" electronic desk calculator in 1971. Understood in this way, the Pascaline is arguably world's earliest mechanical computer. - Literature: Stan Augarten, "Bit by Bit, An Illustrated History of Computers", 1984, pp. 22-30. - A historically accurate replica from 2011. He worked in Amsterdam from 1790 first 'In the Gravenstraat above the Spekslager' then, from 1797, at the St. Nicolaasstraat; before finally moving to Wijdsteeg 4 in 1820 - where he presumably worked until his death in 1845.
A FINE AND RARE ENGLISH WILLIAM III/QUEEN ANNE SILVER BUTTERFIELD PATTERN SUNDIALJOHN ROWLEY, LONDON, CIRCA 1700The plate with three hour scales for 45, 51 and 55 degrees annotated 4-12-8, IIII-XII-VIII, 4-12-8 with the centre Roman scale divided into half and quarter hours as well as ten-minute increments, the centre with foliate engraved infill incorporating stylised interloping scrolls possibly forming an elaborate monogram, overlaid with a hinged bird engraved adjustable gnomon calibrated in degrees for elevation to the outer edge, opposing a glazed compass divided for N, E, S and W only and with gold inlaid N, S annotations to the blued steel pointer, the underside engraved with latitudes for twelve cities in two panels, the left-hand Rome 41.04, Hague 52.1, Amsterdam 52.03, Venice 45.18 and Vienna 48.22 opposing London 51.30, York 53.50, Cambridg 52.17, Bristol 51.30, Exeter 50.40 and Chester 53.17 to the right, the lower edge signed in a curve John Rowley Fecit; in original silk velvet lined ray skin protective case. The instrument 8.5cm (3.625ins) long, 6.7cm (2.625ins) wide, 4cm (1.625ins) approx. high with gnomon raised; the case 9cm (3.5ins) wide, 7.5cm (3ins) deep, 2cm (0.75ins) high closed. Provenance:The Leonard Fuller Collection. John Rowley is recorded in Clifton, Gloria Directory of British Scientific Instrument Makers 1550-1851 as a mathematical instrument maker and book engraver working from 'Behind the Exchange' Threadneedle Street, London in 1691, then from 'The Globe under St. Dunstan's Church' Fleet Street 1702-15 and at Johnson's Court, Fleet Street 1710-27; Clifton noted that the latter address may well have been his living residence. Amongst Rowley's apprentices was Thomas Wright (in 1707) who then went on to become his successor and one of the most important makers of scientific instrument makers of the eighteenth century. Another apprentice was John Coggs who went on to become particularly well known for his sundials, most notably his universal ring dials. This design of portable pocket sundial was devised by Michael Butterfield, an English Instrument maker who settled in Paris around 1685. Although this type of dial became popular with other French makers (most notably those who worked nearby to Butterfield's workshop on 'Le Quay de L'Horloge') very few appear to have been made by English makers in London; hence the present lot is a particularly rare example. Condition Report: The instrument appears to be in fine original condition with the only notable fault being a small shallow chip to the inside edge of the compass glass. The case is intact and in sound original condition. The right-hand eye for the securing latch is missing and there is a small loss to the wooden structure to the interior of the lid at this point. There is also a small section of the delicate raised lip (for locating/closing against the inner edge of the lid) to the lower section missing. The lid has a slight warp/distortion, and the velvet lining has overall fading/wear. The underside has some later pins towards one edge no doubt to secure lifting skin covering at some point. Otherwise, faults are limited to minor age-related wear. Condition Report Disclaimer
A RARE GEORGE IV MAHOGANY CASED JAMES SIX PATTERN MAXIMUM AND MINIMUM RECORDING THERMOMETERJ. SOMALVICO AND COMPANY, LONDON, CIRCA 1825The glazed rectangular case enclosing a tight U-shaped tube incorporating a downward return column to the centre connected at the top to the left, the U-bend filled with mercury and the remainder with spirit incorporating a part filled bulb to the top of the left-hand column, the right-hand column with FAHRENHEIT and REAUMUR scales opposing conforming but inverted scales to the left, with the column itself also including a metal rod 'float' for recording the minimum temperature of exposure, the upper margin inscribed R.J. EATON and signed J. SOMALVICO, MAKERS, LONDON, ('maximum' float not visible).49cm (19.25ins) high, 6.5cm (2.5ins) wide, 3.8cm (1.5ins) deep. The firm of Joseph Somalvico and Company are listed with numerous entries in Banfield, Edwin BAROMETER MAKERS AND RETAILERS 1660-1900 as working from several addresses including 81 Holborn, circa 1795-25; 37 Charles Street, Hatton Garden, circa 1820-40; 2 Hatton Garden 1840-67 and 16 Charles Street 1868-99. The design of the present lot was invented by the British Scientist, James Six, in around 1780. The inscription for 'R.J. Eaton' probably relates to the original owner. Condition Report: The tube is complete and appears undamaged. It is filled with no obvious airlocks within the columns however the 'maximum' marker cannot be seen hence could have worked its way/sunk into the mercury column. The scale has some patchy/streaky discolouration/tarnishing and two of the plate securing screws are missing otherwise appears to be in fine original condition. The case is in good original condition with faults limited to very minor bumps, scuffs and other age-related blemishes. The brass hanging eye is probably an old addition; the rear panel has two 'keyhole' mounting apertures. Condition Report Disclaimer

Europe. Onwyn (Thomas), Comic Map of the Seat of the War with Entirely New Features, published by Rock Brothers and Payne, May 30th 1854, etched allegorical map with contemporary hand colouring, old folds, contained within the publisher's decorative card wrappers which contains a key to the various countries and an explanation of their anthropomorphic depiction, overall size 480 x 675 mm, size when folded 220 x 145 mmQTY: (1)NOTE:A rare anamorphic map which can rightly claim to be the origin of the comic maps of Europe which would become so popular in the 19th century. The map shows the Russian bear as the aggressor in the Crimean War, with the Allied Fleet attempting to clip the bear's claws in the Black Sea, and its coat being emblazoned with the words 'Oppression', 'Tyranny', 'Bigotry' 'Treachery and 'Cruelty'. Other nations have been given anthropomorphic national characterisations that will be reprised and revised during the next seventy years. It is worth noting the set of scales below the title with the 'balance of power’, shows the Russian bear outweighed by the combination of a French cockerel, Turkeys, and a British Lion. The lettering in the title 'Seat of War’ is constructed from soldiers from all the belligerent nations. As the war progressed and casualties mounted, public sentiment turned against treating the war as a subject of mirth and satire. It is therefore perhaps surprising that Rock Brothers and Payne thought it appropriate to issue another edition of this map in 1856. The change in public opinion may explain why this later edition is so scarce.
ARDBEG ALLIGATOR COMMITTEE RESERVE ISLAY SINGLE MALT The Missouri new oak casks used to produce this limited edition whisky were heavily charred, leaving their insides resembling alligator scales.51.2% ABV / 70cl Located on the island’s rugged south coast, Ardbeg distillery represents the peatier end of the Islay spectrum. While it has endured some tough times, spending several years mothballed, the distillery has undergone a bit of a renaissance since being bought over by Glenmorangie and is now on a stable footing. While it still retains its signature sooty spirit, Ardbeg has also adopted its new parent company’s fondness for experimental cask finishes, arguably increasing its appeal.
