SARI: A VERY RARE WOOD NETSUKE OF A NINGYO (MERMAID)By Sari, signed Sari 左里Japan, Iwashiro province, first half of 19th century, Edo period (1615-1868)Finely carved, the mermaid pulling her tail fin with both hands towards her body, her long hair falling along her back. The scales, fins, and long hair are finely incised, the oval face with a hypnotic smile. Natural himotoshi through the tail and right arm, signed SARI within an oval reserve.LENGTH 4.3 cmCondition: Good condition, one damage to the edge of the tail, possibly restored.Provenance: Ex-collection Teddy Hahn, Darmstadt. “Teddy” Hahn (1933-2012) was a well-known and respected collector of netsuke and other Asian works of art. After spending time in museums to study the early cultures of the world, finding particular interest in their sculptures, he began collecting, remarking, “I somehow knew it would have a profound influence on my life. How right I was. And how happy I have been.”Ningyo are half-human, half-fish sea creatures that equate with the mermaid of Western traditions. Most likely inspired by the sighting of dugongs in the ocean, folklore transforms them into alluring females, usually depicted cradling a baby to their naked breasts or holding a tama, the sacred jewel of the dragon king of the sea.Sari is well-known for his carvings of snails and animals, the present ningyo seems to be unique for the artist.Auction comparison:Compare a related wood netsuke of two fugu fishes by Sari, early 19th century, at Bonhams, The Julius and Arlette Katchen Collection of Fine Netsuke - Part I, 8 November 2016, London, lot 163 (sold for 5,000 GBP).

A RARE TIANQI AND QIANGJIN LACQUER PEACH-SHAPED BOX AND COVERLate 16th/early 17th century The slightly conical cover incised and decorated with a large writhing three-clawed dragon chasing a flaming pearl, the dragon with meticulously detailed scales and and mane, all amidst billowing ruyi-clouds, the box decorated with waves crashing against rocks, coral and peaches, the base incised and gilt with an apocryphal Wanli six-character mark, with Japanese shifuku textile cover 7.5cm (3in) diam. The shape of the present lot is extremely rare but this form can be seen in a related carved three-colour lacquer peach-shaped box and cover, Jiajing six-character mark and of the period, decorated with two phoenix chasing a 'flaming pearl', illustrated in 2000 Years of Lacquer, Hong Kong, 1993, no.55, where it is noted that the peach form is synonymous with longevity and would therefore have particularly appealed to the Jiajing Emperor's obsession with the quest for immortality. Because of the auspicious connotations related to longevity, the present box may have been conceived as a gift to commemorate the birthday of its owner. Peaches are perhaps China's most auspicious fruit, symbolising longevity and happiness, and flowering peach branches are believed to ward off evil. The 'Classic of Poetry' Shi Jing, edited during the 5th century BC, mentions the peach as a metaphor for thriving marriage and family. In later times, the poet Tao Qian (365-427) wrote about a fisherman who discovered a paradisical world after following the source of a stream in a peach orchard, referred to as the 'Peach Blossom Spring' – through a crevice in a rock. A peach orchard is also the setting for the 'oath of brotherhood' sworn by the three main characters of the 'Romance of the Three Kingdoms'. Large 'peaches of immortality' were also believed to grow in the wondrous garden of the Queen Mother of the West: here, the trees flowered only once every three thousand years, took three thousand years to bear fruit and another three thousand to ripen, and the peaches were then offered in a banquet to the Immortals. The mischievous Monkey King Sun Wukong, protagonist of the novel 'Journey to the West', stole the peaches of Immortality and was subsequently recruited by Guanyin to accompany the Tang dynasty (618-907) monk Xuanzang on his trip to India to find the Buddhist sutras; see Chih-tsing Hsia, 'The Journey to the West', The Classic Chinese Novel, New York, 168, pp.115–164.See also a similar peach-shaped box, but in carved red lacquer, 15th century, illustrated in 2000 Years of Lacquer, Hong Kong, 1993, no.51.This lot is subject to the following lot symbols: ** VAT on imported items at a preferential rate of 5% on Hammer Price and the prevailing rate on Buyer's Premium. For further information on this lot please visit Bonhams.com

Lot 875

DRAGONSLAYER (1981) - Vermithrax Pejorative ScaleA dragon scale from Matthew Robbins' adventure fantasy Dragonslayer. Scales were shed by the vicious dragon Vermithrax Pejorative, who terrorised the kingdom of Urland. Scales were gathered by Valerian (Caitlin Clarke) and affixed to Galen's (Peter MacNicol) shield to protect him against Vermithrax's flame breath. The scale is made of fibreglass and resin, with a raised centre and a textured ripple effect towards one end. It is painted dark grey-brown and portions of silicon with imprints of other scales remain on the both sides, suggesting it may have formed part of the dragon-scale shield. The scale shows signs of paint wear and degradation to the resin from age. Dimensions: 33 cm x 20 cm x 3 cm (13" x 8" x 1") Estimate: £600 - 800 MThis lot will be auctioned on Saturday, November 5th. ALIENS (1986) - "Bug Stomper"/"Smart Ass" Dropship Model MiniatureA "Bug Stomper"/"Smart Ass" dropship model miniature from James Cameron's sci-fi action sequel Aliens. Ellen Ripley (Sigourney Weaver) and an elite team of Colonial Marines used a dropship named "Bug Stomper" to land on the surface of LV-426, but it later crash-landed during an attempted evacuation. Bishop (Lance Henriksen) remotely operated the second dropship - named "Smart Ass" - to rescue himself, Ripley, Newt (Carrie Henn) and Hicks (Michael Biehn). The UD-4L class dropship, commonly known as the "Cheyenne", was designed by Cameron in collaboration with legendary artist Ron Cobb and was loosely based on an Apache attack helicopter, as well as other Vietnam War-era aircraft, in keeping with the film's Vietnam War undertones.Several dropship models were made for the production for different purposes, and to different scales. This dropship features both "01" and "02" decals, one on each side, indicating that it was used as both "Bug Stomper" and "Smart Ass" during filming. The cockpit features the "Smart Ass" decals on both sides, and white text below the windows reads "Corporal Ferro/PFC Spunkmeyer". Inside the cockpit are two miniature pilots dressed in military gear. The model is primarily made of fibreglass over a metal skeleton, with resin and styrene detailing. The front two landing pads are high-quality reproductions. The wings and missile pods are mounted on hinges and can be folded out, and the dropship has been intentionally distressed to appear well-used in battle. Sections of the dropship, including the wings, have undergone restoration. It has some additional scuffs and scratches, some of the decals are peeling away, there is a hole intentionally cut into the top, and the missile pods on either side of the cockpit are no longer present. It is displayed on a custom-built metal stand. Dimensions (wings open): 205 cm x 122.5 cm x 63 cm (80 3/4" x 48 1/4" x 24 3/4")Contains electronics; see electronics notice in the Buyer's Guide.Special shipping required; see special shipping notice in the Buyer's Guide.
