An extremely rare and important 18 c. 2' four fold ivory gunners rulewith silver fittings profusely marked with numerous scales for the loads of a large variety of cannons and other firearms, probably one of the most important rules we have offered and in wonderful condition F HEADING The Gunners Rule This very rare ivory Gunners' Rule is a truly magnificent example of the rule-makers art. The maker has managed to mark more than 2500 letters, numerals etc on every available surface and to give instruction on the loading weights of powder and shot for various sizes of "Brafs and Iron Guns, Musquets, Carbine, Pistol, Wall Pieces, Small Arms, Brafs and Iron Morters, Brafs Howits, Carronades" (all sic) etc. Also included is the formula "To find the No of shot in a Sq.r or Obl.g Pile..." There is also reference that states "In the Table of brafs guns G.D. signifies Gen. I Desaguliers" This refers to Major General Thomas Desaguliers and may give a guide to dating the rule. Thomas was born in 1721 to John Theophilus Desaguliers who had fled to England at an early age to escape the French persecution of the Huguenots. His father was obviously a very learned man for the age of 31 he was made a Member of the Royal Society, was an assistant to Isaac Newton and a distinguished scientist, inventor, hydraulic engineer, priest and a noted Freemason, becoming the Grand Master of the Grand Lodge of England in 1719. So it was hardly surprising that his son Thomas went on to follow his father in becoming a scientist and inventor and as a military man applying his talents to various improvements in ordinance, especially cannons and their carriages. He is thought to be the first to be employed by the English army to apply scientific principles to the production and efficiency of cannons and the power of gunnery. He was made Chief Fire Master at the Royal Arsenal at Woolwich in 1748 and was Superintendent when he died in 1780
