L`Amerique Septentrionale & Meridionale Divisee en ses Principales Parties, ou sont Distingues les uns des Autres les EstatsÂ… . This beautiful map of the Americas is derived from Jaillot`s map of North America in 1674, which in turn drew on the cartography of Nicolas Sanson. California appears as an island and the Great Lakes are open-ended in the west. The R. del Norte (Rio Grande) rises from a large lake in Apache country and flows incorrectly into the Mer Rouge between the mainland and the island of California. A spurious lake is depicted in the Appalachian Mountains just above Floride Francoise. In the North Pacific several coastlines stretch toward Asia with Japan appearing on the left border. In the South Pacific Terre de Quir and the Salomon Islands are depicted. The mythical Lac Parime appears in South America with the golden city of Manoa el Dorado on its shore. The bottom of the map is richly embellished with two great scenes of Europeans trading with natives. The scene on the left incorporates eight distance scales into a large monument. The title cartouche is rendered in the flourishing style that gained popularity at the turn of the seventeenth century. A second French title is in the top margin. A nice impression with full original color, minor offsetting, and a professionally repaired centerfold separation that enters 1/2"" into map at bottom. There are two short cracks at bottom left caused by the oxidation of the green pigment, both of which have been professionally reinforced on verso. 22.4"" W x 18.1"" H . Valck, Gerard . 1695
Amerique Septentrionale . This is an attractive small map of North America and the West Indies. Mexico is in control of the southwest and the only mention of Texas is the Rio Colorado de Texas. There is good detail of the river systems with only a few cities named along the eastern seaboard including New York, Philadelphia and Washington. Alaska is Amerique Russe and still a bit misshapen. Decorated by fancy titling and two distance scales. Issued folding with original outline color. 8.2"" W x 7.1"" H . Dufour, Auguste-Henri . 1828
Amerique Septentrionale . An attractive map that shows all of North America, the Caribbean, and the northern portion of South America. This map was made just before Texas declared its independence in 1836, and shows Texas as a province within Mexico. The border between the United States and Canada extends into present-day British Columbia, reflecting U.S. interests in the area. Topography is depicted by hachure, and many native tribes are noted. The title is embellished with flourishes and five distance scales. Engraved by Thierry. Clean and bright with one errant spot of color at top left. 11.9"" W x 8.6"" H . Malte-Brun, Conrad . 1835
North America . Detailed and finely engraved map that portrays an Independent Texas and has Mexico controlling Nueva California. The boundary between Canada and the United States is unengraved, so the ownership of Oregon Territory (here labeled Columbia) is undetermined. Filled with well-developed topography, the map names numerous forts, trading posts, Indian tribes and locates L. Youla roughly near the Great Salt Lake with the American Fur Depot on its eastern shore. The R. Buenaventura extends to the Pacific from two branches, one originating from a large swamp in the Great Basin. The course of the Snake River is fairly accurate, but the Colorado River originates too far north and rushes to the Sea of Cortez in a straight line. Locates the three buttes in present-day Idaho -- important landmarks on the Oregon Trail and for earlier fur trappers. Lake Michigan retains its erroneous elongated shape. Distance scales outside of border give English Miles and Spanish Leagues. Engraved by J. & C. Walker and published by Charles Knight. Light toning with a few faint spots in the image. A couple of short edge tears are confined to the left blank margin. 12"" W x 15"" H . SDUK Society for the Diffusion of Useful Knowledge, 1845
Stati-Uniti . This Italian edition of Duvotenay`s map of the United States shows Mexico encompassing the majority of the Southwest and California. Texas is shown as an independent Republic. The states east of the Mississippi River are named and outlined. Besides Missouri, Arkansas, Louisiana, and Texas, land west of the Mississippi River is separated into the District of the Mandines, District of the Osages, District of the Ozark, District of the Sioux, and District of the Oregon. Canada is called Nuova Bretagna. The map includes decorative borders with graphic elements in the corners and four distance scales. Scattered foxing and toning with small remnants of masking tape in the blank margins on verso. 12"" W x 8.8"" H . Duvotenay, Thunot . 1845
Etats-Unis de l`Amerique Septentrionale . Interesting map of the United States in the first part of the 19th century that features a very well mapped river system. Missouri has a vertical western border and the Northwest Territory takes in present-day Wisconsin and Minnesota. Arkansas Territory is in its largest configuration with its western boundary at the Texas panhandle. Texas is still part of Mexico and includes a few place names such as S. Antonio and Nacogdoches. The balance of the Midwest is labeled with numerous Indian tribes. Fancy titling in a small oval cartouche. Four distance scales with longitude measured only from Paris. A flawless example. 11.8"" W x 9.2"" H . Lapie, Alexander Emile & Pierre . 1830
Carte de la Partie Nord, des Etats Unis, de l`Amerique Septentrionale . This early map presents the northern part of the newly-formed United States. It covers the region from northern Virginia to Maine (Machasuzet Bay), and westward to include Lake Erie. The map has good topographical detail, and it also includes numerous settlements, forts, and Indian villages. Locates Baltimore, Annapolis, Alexandria, New York, Boston, and Ft. Halifax. There are four distance scales at upper left. On bluish paper with a hint of toning along the centerfold. 12.8"" W x 8.5"" H . Bonne/Raynal, 1780
Gli Stati Uniti dell`America Delineati sulle ultime Osservazioni - Terzo Foglio che comprende Parte Della Virginia e della Carolina . This uncommon map is part of Cassini`s six-sheet representation of the settled portions of North America, now part of the new United States. Cassini drew largely from the Zatta-Mitchell map of North America. This sheet is focused on the Mississippi and Ohio River valleys, showing portions of Lakes Erie and Michigan at top; the latter with the note of Fiume e Porto Chicagou near present-day Chicago. The interior is identified as Virginia and North Carolina Territory, but it covers present-day Indiana, Ohio, Kentucky, and portions of Missouri and Tennessee. The native tribes are noted, and the forts and roads are located along with a number of towns. The map is decorated with a landscape cartouche showing a turbaned man lounging on the shores of a river. Lightly toned with original outline color. A professionally repaired tear enters the map just above the distance scales and is now nearly invisible. A manuscript ink page number is in the top right corner outside the neatline. 18.8"" W x 13.5"" H . Cassini, Giovanni Maria . 1797
Carte des Etats-Unis du Mexique . An attractive map that shows the Southwest to Mexico, the Yucatan and Guatemala. This map was made prior to Texas declaring its independence in 1836, and shows Texas as a province within Mexico. Topography is denoted by hachure, and many native tribes are noted. The title is embellished with flourishes and four distance scales. A nice impression with one small worm track confined to the lower blank margin. 12"" W x 8.8"" H . Thierry, 1835
Mexico and Guatemala . Covers the region from the southern United States south to Costa Rica. The southern portion of the new state of Texas is shown, and Mexico is divided into states. Includes distance scales in English miles and Spanish leagues. Original outline color with faint toning along sheet edges. 16.8"" W x 12.9"" H . Chapman & Hall, 1848
Cary`s Six Sheet Map of England and Wales, with Part of Scotland: On Which Are Carefully Laid Down All the Direct and Principal Cross Roads, the Course of the Rivers and Navigable Canals... This large map of England, Wales and a portion of Scotland was printed on six sheets, which were joined to form three sheets, dissected and mounted on linen. Counties are delineated in full color. The map is absolutely filled with detail including postal roads, turnpike roads, canals and rivers, and names numerous cities, towns and parks. Includes distance scales in British Statute miles and miles. Published by John Cary at 86, St. James`s Street. The map is housed in a green paperboard slipcase. The map has several areas, especially in the North Sea, where the adhesive that holds the map to the linen has shown through, appearing as a damp stain. There is one map panel at the top of the second sheet that has become loose and a few are dog-eared. The slipcase is heavily rubbed with a few stains. 40.1"" W x 17.6"" H . Cary, John . 1828
Le Royaume d`Angleterre Distingue en Ses Provinces . This is the first state of this handsome map of England and Wales. It also includes a small portion of Ireland`s eastern coast, southern Scotland, the Channel Islands, and a stretch of French coastline. England and Wales are divided into counties, and several towns, cities, rivers, and topographical details are shown. The stunning decorative title cartouche features the United Kingdom coat-of-arms with a banner underneath reading Je Maintiendray (""I will maintain,"" which is strangely enough the motto of the Netherlands), along with trumpeting angels, mermen, and symbols of military might. A second cartouche flanked by putti encloses the six distance scales. A compass rose capped with a fleur-de-lis appears in the Irish Sea. Jaillot, in partnership with the sons of Nicolas Sanson, re-engraved Sanson`s map on a larger scale in the 1680s. This particular map was published 20 years later, and while based on Sanson`s cartography (who is credited in the cartouche), it is a Jaillot composition. There is an alternate title running along the top neatline: Le Royaume d`Angleterre, Distingue en Ses Provinces; Scavoir en Northumberland, Mercie, East-Angles, Essex, Kent, Sussex, West-Sex, et la Principaute de Galles. Printed on two sheets that have been joined. A dark impression and original outline color with light offsetting and minor toning. 22.9"" W x 29.8"" H . Sanson/Jaillot, 1693
Le Royaume de Danemark Subdivise en Ses Principales Provinces Tire de Plusieurs Memoires . This bold map of Denmark and southern Sweden is engraved to show political divisions, rivers, marshes, shoals, forests, and towns. The northern parts of the Netherlands, Germany, and Poland appear as well. The decorative title cartouche features Diana, goddess of the hunt, with a quiver of arrows and animals running around her. Another cartouche encloses five distance scales. There is an alternate title running across the neatline at top: Le Royaume de Danemark, ou sont les Isles de Seelande et de Fyonie, le Duche de Sleswick, et les Dioeceses de Rypen, Aarhus, Alborg, Wiborg, dans la Presquisle de Iutlande.... Printed on two sheets that have been joined. A nice impression and original outline color. Nearly the entire sheet has been damp stained, but the paper quality remains durable. There is light offsetting, including some color offsetting, and a short separation along the joint at bottom. 34.2"" W x 21.6"" H . Sanson/Jaillot, 1692
Carte des Sept Provinces-Unies des Pays-Bas, Connues sous le Nom General de Hollande. Avec les Provinces Autrichiennes Situees dans le Meme Pays . This densely detailed map of the Low Countries shows the area from the islands off the coast of Friesland and Embden in the north to Luxembourg in the south. The seventeen provinces are named, as are several rivers and towns, including major cities such as Amsterdam, Rotterdam, the Hague, Bruges, Brussels, Luxembourg and Haarlem. Includes seven distance scales. Engraved by Andre. On a sturdy sheet with minor toning along the sheet`s edges, well away from image. 8.6"" W x 12.6"" H . Bonne, Rigobert . 1781

Rossi, Giamcomo Giovanni . 1696
Routes des Postes et des Voitures pour les Marchandises et pour les Voyages par l`Empire dans les Principaux Etats de l`Europe . In addition to postal routes, it shows political divisions, topographical detail, and myriad towns and cities, including Berlin, Paris, Budapest (still split across the Danube), Hamburg, Vienna, and Warsaw. Includes a cartouche with nine distance scales. Engraved by I. Stemmers. Printed on two joined sheets. A crisp impression and original outline color with minor soiling and faint offsetting. 26.6"" W x 19.2"" H . Ottens, Reiner and Joshua . 1745
Stato di Ragusi. Bocca del Fiume Narenta, Isole di Lesina e Curzola nella Dalmatia... This beautifully engraved map depicts the islands off the coast of the Dalmatia region in Croatia. It centers on the Peljesac peninsula and extends to include Hvar (the longest island in the Adriatic), Korcula, Mljet, and numerous smaller islands. There is excellent topographical detail throughout that emphasizes the mountainous terrain of the region. Notes in Italian text mark Venetian victories in the Great Turkish War and the destruction of Dubrovnik (Ragusi) in the earthquake of 1667, and Venetian coats of arms are sprinkled throughout the landscape. The decorative title cartouche at top right features the pope, and another cartouche at bottom for the distance scales includes the Dalmatian coats of arms with three crowned lions. Coronelli established the society of geographers ""Accademia degli Argonauta"", one of the oldest in the world, and became the official geographer of the Venetian Republic. His maps of the Adriatic Sea were of particular strategic and economic importance and were also often used to glorify Venice and its victories over the Turks. A fine impression on watermarked paper with light toning along the centerfold, minor offsetting, and a centerfold separation in the bottom blank margin. There is a small hole in the top left blank margin away from the map image. 23.9"" W x 17.9"" H . Coronelli, Vicenzo Maria . 1706
Les Indes Orientales, ou sont Distingues les Empires et RoyaumesÂ… . A decorative floral cartouche surrounds the title, and three scales of miles are located at the bottom of the map. Engraved by Guillaume Delahaye. Original outline color on watermarked paper with one tiny hole just off the eastern coast of India, some very faint printer`s ink residue, and a small hole confined to the left blank margin. 22.3"" W x 19"" H . Robert de Vaugondy, Gilles . 1751
