dating: first quarter of the 19th Century provenance: London Curved, single-and false-edged blade with wide fuller, finely engraved (areas of rust and scrapings) with the inscription (not completely legible) "Presented by the Officers of the 2nd Battn 66 Regt to Major Kelly 4th Ceylon Corps (their late Commanding Officer) as a Mark of their Highest Respect and Esteem" surrounded by figures and floral motifs, on the other side the inscription "PORTUGAL 16 January 1811" among figures, trophies and floral motifs; silver-plated hilt, langets with oak branches, angled pommel in the shape of a lion head, neck and cap with scales, rosette and leaves, micro-checkered, ivory grip with silver ring-nut decorated with laurel oak branches; wooden scabbard with shagreen covering, beautiful, silver mounts finely engraved with trophies and floral motifs, each hilt featuring a bas-relieved medal depicting Hercules with the Nemea lion, Victory and Justice; the back decorated en suite and featuring the manufacturer's name "OLIPHANT & SON LONDON". Snake-shaped knuckle guard. London, silver stamps and "TS" stamp probably standing for Thomas Shekleton.The Lieutenant Colonel Richard Kelly enlisted in the41st Regiment of Foot the 12th of January 1799, then in 1802 in the 66th (Berkshire) Regiment of Foot; in 1809 he arrived in Portugal and, after the Senior Official was gravely wounded, he led the Regiment for two years. He guided the Regiment during the battle of Talavera and, after being wounded, he was honored with the Gold Medal. He left the 66th Regiment in 1811 (his officials gave him this outstanding sabre in this occasion) and he enlisted the 4th Regiment with the rank of Major and he ended his career becoming Lieutenet Colonel in the 83rd Regiment (County of Dublin) of Foot. A Prussian Cuirassier trooper's steel helmet, having a brass spike plate with steel spike, lobster tail neck guard and brass eagle plate, with leather backed chin scales and brown leather liner, together with the original canvas cover. Provenance, Ex Rushbrook Hall, Bury St Edmunds. Condition Report / Extra Information Chinscales complete and unbroken. One rivet missing from brass spike plate. Two small areas of discolouration to the base of lobster-tail and to front peak of the helmet. Area of staining and holes to the base of the cover, and several other smaller holes to cover.
