dating: 16th / 19th Century provenance: India, The helmet with iron skull engraved and carved with floral motifs and with some gilded elements and a lower band with inscriptions, provided with upper cusp, two plume holders, sliding nose-piece, mail neck-defense with simple closing rings. Beautiful and large zirah bagtar (17th century?) consisting of riveted rings (missing parts) with front opening and long sleeves. On the front side of the breast-plate four iron plates provided with closing loops and with smaller plates to protect the hips. The back-plate typically worked with long rows of scales. The dhal decorated with floral carvings and engravings, with some gilt elements, four brass studs and with no lining. The bazu band with very similar decorations. Mounted on a modern mannequin and with a vest of recent manufacturing. A beautiful assembled armor of great impact. height as shown circa 200 cm.
dating: 18th Century provenance: Persia, Curved, single-edged, fine damask blade with central groove and another groove on the back worked in five sectors, flat at the first part and with two cartouches on each side in Arabic, the third side with the inscription. 'Abbās is the representative of Ali’s rule and acts on his behalf'and 'The work of Assadollāh', remains of gilding on the borders, the cartouches on the other side with gold-inaid decorations. Cross-shaped, iron hilt decorated with gold floral motifs. Walrus ivory grip scales. Angled pommel with gilt copper cap (perhaps of a later period). Wooden scabbard covered with modern-style burgundy velvet. With the expertise of Dr. Manouchehr Moshtagh Khorasani. length 92.5 cm.
dating: 18th Century provenance: Turkey, Wide, curved, single-and false-edged blade, of damask, with central fuller doubling toward the weak. Right side with a long inscription in Arabic at the base and borders with gold decorations up to the tip. The same grooves and marks can be seen on the other side, golden star and moon at the base, borders decorated en suite. Massive hilt with brass cross-quillon; silver, central, engraved band and big grip scales with angled pommel. With the expertise of Dr. Manouchehr Moshtagh Khorasani. length 88 cm.
dating: 19th Century provenance: Japan, Hoshi bachi kabuto with iron hachi featuring sixteen cusped plates. Gilded brass scales engraved on the back and on the front. Large tehen kanamono with engraved external disc. Big fukigaeshi loaded with Ume kamon. Beautiful and wide shikoro. Maedate with gilded wooden dragon. Inside the skull, on the leather, the handwritten signature 'Mito ju Miyochin ki Yoshinaga saku' (by Yoshinaga, a resident of Mito province). Black lacquered iron menpo (a hook of the nose-piece detached) with well-preserved finishing and large yodare kake. The other elements all en suite with nadowa, do, sode, kote, kusazuri, haidate, suneate, all with fastenings and mounted on contemporary fabrics. Complete with wooden mannequin and two gusoku-bitsu. Provided with a lacquered and certified gunsen. Epoch: late Edo period. Elegant Japanese armor of very high quality, complete and coeval, of the Domaru type entirely in black lacquered hon-kozane and laced kebiki ito odoshi in blue and white. With a 2010 certificate from an art gallery in Paris, which indicates that Yoshinaga used to make armors in the Mito region, serving the local part of the Tokugawa family. Tokugawa Nariaki himself (1800-1860, father of Yoshinobu, the last shogun) brought the master gunsmiths of the myochin family to this region, and he let them bear the name of 'Yoshi-'. The sui fukigaeshi mon are probably those of the Maeda family of Kanazawa, the gallery studied the relationships between the Maeda from Kanazawa and the Tokugawa from Mito.See 'Armures du Japon' by R. Burawoy (Fondation Kozu, Torilinks Editions 2005, Paris) particularly the armours number 37, 41 and 47. height as shown circa 145 cm.
dating: last quarter of the 16th Century provenance: Southern Germany, Interlocked helmet with skull made in one piece, provided with wide comb featuring a twisted edge. The skull worked with blackened and longitudinal lowered bands continuing on the raisable brim, which is cusped and featuring a twisted rope. Blackened beaver provided with two beaver plates with large, cross-shaped and rectangular air holes. The lower part of the helmet with an interlocking twisted channel between the skull and the braver. With iron plume-holder at the back. The internal part dyed in black and with remains of old coiets. Four-plate gorget, the upper plate with a fine, twisted rope, with blackened lowered bands, the relieved parts are iron-colored. Fine breast-plate with a quite pronounced tapul, with vertical bands and large, lowered, black-dyed areas. Thick neckline with a fine twisted decoration surmounting a mark. Complete brassards with asymmetrical pauldrons, worked en suite and with throat-guard. The right one strongly carved at the front and featuring a cusped wheel worked as a flower on a blackened background and with a roped edge en suite with the pauldron. The left plate of the shoulder decorated with a compass rose and small holes on a blackened background and with ropes worked en suite with the rest. Brassards worked with bands in relief on a blackened background. The gauntlets decorated likewise. The fingers scales are restored, as specified in the previous sale (see below). Back-plate worked en suite. Elegant complete knee-cop with the same decoration as the breast-plate and with ropes worked as the other parts of the armour. The black-colored parts are probably refreshed. A beautiful ensemble difficult to find in such a cohesive and good state. Gorget with plate-neckline, worked and engraved en suite; twisted cabling at the borders of the neckline, thicker the upper one. Seven-plate pauldrons with brass rivets; decorated on bands picturing oblique frames and floral motifs and spirals engravings; the bigger plates decorated with a spiral around a female half-face portrait, with a big cartouche picturing the effigy of a knight, framed by spirals and angels. The chest-plate with a central riser, engraved with bands, frames and floral pattern; two half-faces male portraits; the back-plate worked in the same style. Vambraces en suite, folding at the elbow-cops, two-plate vambraces. One-piece tassets, with scales and engravings; iron rivets. Reparations. height 88 cm.
