The snake was a common motif in ancient Indus Valley art and is believed to have had a range of symbolic meanings, including as a symbol of regeneration and rebirth, as well as a representation of power and fertility. Pottery bowls such as this were an important part of everyday life in the Indus Valley civilization, serving a range of practical and ceremonial functions. They were used for cooking, serving food and drink, and for the storage of grain and other commodities. Pottery was also an important medium for artistic expression and cultural identity, with pottery vessels serving as important markers of regional styles and traditions.Size: L:120mm / W:295mm ; 1.16kgProvenance: From the private collection of an Essex gentleman; previously in an old British Collection, formed in the 1990s.
