A Chinese plaque, of oblong form moulded with panels of a temple, stars and Chinese characters to the front and geometric motifs to the back (possibly paint tablets) in double glazed oak frame, 23cm x 18cm, an early 20th Century iron plaque cast in high relief with a head and shoulder portrait of a bearded philosopher in a shaped oak frame, 14cm high, a set of brass postal scales on serpentine fronted walnut base inset with brass weights, 17.5cm wide and a cow horn with white metal mounts, 39.5cm long (4)
2nd century BC-2nd century AD. A group of two iron single-edged daggers comprising: the larger with swept curve to the blade and shallow fuller to the back on each face, square-section tang, broad bolster, washer pommel; the smaller similar with facetted bolster and transverse pin to secure the scales. 260 grams total, 17-35.5cm (6 3/4 - 14"). Property of a Surrey collector; acquired in the early 1970s. [2] Fair condition.
250-200 million years BP. A mixed group of three Triassic phytosaur scutes from Arizona, USA. 90 grams total, 34-58mm (1 1/4 - 2 1/4"). Property of a Lincolnshire, UK, gentleman; acquired on the UK art market. Most Pseudosuchians or croc-line Archosaurs had short legs, wide, heavy bodies with rows of armoured scales, long tails, and long toothy snouts. [3, No Reserve] Fine condition.
199-175 million years BP. A rare partial fossil fish Daepedium sp. in matrix, from Holtzmaden, Germany. 2 kg, 35cm (13 3/4"). Property of a Lincolnshire, UK, gentleman; acquired on the UK art market. The specimen displays some nice scales and head bone plates. The Dapedium genus of fish was among the most common in the seas of the Late Triassic and Early Jurassic. The body was covered with armoured scales while the skull was also armoured with dermal plates. The fins were small in relation to its body, which suggests that Dapedium were not especially fast swimming fish. Dapedium was a carnivorous fish with small but robust teeth and additional crushing teeth on the palate. A solitary predator, it lived on a diet of molluscs and crustaceans. [No Reserve] Fine condition.
18th-19th century AD. A cased set of scales to check the weights of the English gold guinea and half guinea coins, with steel balance bar and pair of brass pans suspended with green twine, with two knopped weights marked '5 8' and 2 16' (for 5 pennyweights 8 grains and 2 pennyweights 16 grains respectively), with 'lion' verification marks and fitted in a pierced wood holder block; contained in an oval japanned case with hinged lid. 80 grams total, case 120mm long. See Shepherd & Musham, nos. 113-115 for similar sets. The minimum weight standard for guinea and half guinea coins was set at '5 8' and '2 16' respectively from 1775 and the guinea denomination was replaced by the sovereign in the recoinage of 1816. [No Reserve] Very fine condition; case exterior worn.
