Property of a Lincolnshire, UK, gentleman; acquired on the UK art market. Most Pseudosuchians or croc-line Archosaurs had short legs, wide, heavy bodies with rows of armoured scales, long tails, and long toothy snouts. [3, No Reserve] Fine condition.

Lot 2266

199-175 million years BP. A rare partial fossil fish Daepedium sp. in matrix, from Holtzmaden, Germany. 2 kg, 35cm (13 3/4"). Property of a Lincolnshire, UK, gentleman; acquired on the UK art market. The specimen displays some nice scales and head bone plates. The Dapedium genus of fish was among the most common in the seas of the Late Triassic and Early Jurassic. The body was covered with armoured scales while the skull was also armoured with dermal plates. The fins were small in relation to its body, which suggests that Dapedium were not especially fast swimming fish. Dapedium was a carnivorous fish with small but robust teeth and additional crushing teeth on the palate. A solitary predator, it lived on a diet of molluscs and crustaceans. [No Reserve] Fine condition.

A cased set of scales to check the weights of the English gold guinea and half guinea coins, with steel balance bar and pair of brass pans suspended with green twine, with two knopped weights marked '5 8' and 2 16' (for 5 pennyweights 8 grains and 2 pennyweights 16 grains respectively), with 'lion' verification marks and fitted in a pierced wood holder block; contained in an oval japanned case with hinged lid. 80 grams total, case 120mm long. See Shepherd & Musham, nos. 113-115 for similar sets. The minimum weight standard for guinea and half guinea coins was set at '5 8' and '2 16' respectively from 1775 and the guinea denomination was replaced by the sovereign in the recoinage of 1816.
