Turner Nineteenth Century Scientific Instruments (1983) p. 285 & 286 for an explanation of these folding scales. It appears that English examples were essentially a draughtsman’s aid while the French was intended for gunnery

A Third Reich sextant, by C Plath, Hamburg, number 13784, dated Jan 1935, the arm marked “System Admiral Gago Coutinho” etc, hollow ground plastic handle which takes a battery to illuminate the various scales. GC (some wear to black painted finish, all sighting lenses missing); in its fitted steel case with 2 spare spirit levels, lens holder and spaces for sighting lenses. GC (externally rusted)
