THE OTTOMAN SILVER-MOUNTED SHAMSHIR PRESENTED TO CAPTAIN COLIN MACKAY OF BIGHOUSE BY MOHAMMED ALI PASHA OF EGYPT IN 1807 FOLLOWING HIS COMMAND OF THE GRENADIER COMPANY OF THE 2ND BATTALION OF THE 78TH REGIMENT OF FOOT AT EL HAMET IN 1807 with curved watered blade double-edged over the last third, encrusted with a gold cyrillic inscription along the back-edge, and further inscriptions within a rectangular panel and a cartouche on one side, stamped with the bladesmith's signature towards the hilt and inlaid with gold linear ornament, silver cross-piece engraved with a flowerhead in the centre, formed with a pair of straight quillons with bud-shaped terminals, moulded silver back-strap, and a pair of horn grip-scales (small cracks), in its original leather-covered wooden scabbard with large silver mounts including locket and chape each engraved with flowers and border ornament en suite with the hilt, the latter stamped with a silver mark (rubbed), and the silver parts retaining traces of gilding throughout 82cm; 32D8in bladeOn loan to the National War Museum of Scotland 1932-2005, inv. no. L1932-151. The inscriptions include Qur'an, Surah al-Talaq (LXV), parts of 3; Surah Hud (XI), parts of 56 and Surah al-Naml (XXVII), 30.
A GROUP OF FIVE BOWIE-TYPE KNIVES, mostly late Victorian and Sheffield-made, comprising one with 6 3/4in. blade, nickel-plated guard, natural staghorn grip-scales, and leather sheath with nickel-plated mounts; three further examples with blade lengths of between 6in. and 8in., all with natural staghorn grip-scales, two with sheaths; the last a push-dagger with 6in. blade, and chequered wooden grip-scales, in leather sheath.

(not including scope), in a universal case. The rifle was completed in June 1982 and appears to be little used
