1932 Bentley 4/8-Litre TourerRegistration Number: GT 8776Chassis Number: VF4008Engine Number: WK2665With their ultra-desirable running gear based on the 8-Litre chassis, many 4-Litre Bentleys were converted into specials using the more traditional and often more powerful WO Bentley engines. GT 8776 is one such car, having started life as a standard 4-Litre in January 1932, it originally wore HJ Mulliner saloon coachwork. Many decades ago, this body was removed and, according to Michael Hay, reinstated on a Rolls-Royce Phantom II. Apparently dismantled by the late 1960s, it was later rejuvenated and rebodied with a curvaceous Vanden Plas body, in which form Alex Tanner bought the car.Discovering the coachwork was not best suited to his intended trips overseas and with the 4-Litre running gear widely regarded as the ultimate 'blank canvas' for the basis of that mythical beast, the 'Le Mans-style 8-Litre', Alex Tanner instructed specialists, VBE Restorations, to create for him such a car from VF4008. The 4-Litre's major components have remained together, but with the addition of a powerhouse of an 8-Litre engine. The engine is based on a 6 ½-Litre, formerly fitted to a William Arnold saloon, and had been on loan to, and displayed at the BDC HQ. A rebuild to 8-Litre specification, with a new crankshaft with modern shells, special rods, crankcase conversion and opening up the crankcase to suit 110mm pistons, was carried out by Elmdon Vintage Automobiles Ltd.Clearly constructed to a very high specification, the 8-Litre has been used since 2010 for extensive touring on the Continent, including almost annual trips on the 'Downs' Vintage Bentley Tours of France.Finished in very dark British Racing Green, the coachwork is in Vanden Plas-style 'Le Mans' four-seat tourer configuration, with fabric-covered body, cycle wings, leather bonnet straps and quick-release radiator cap. Headlights are large diameter, top-quality Carl Zeiss. The green leather interior with green carpeting is in lovely condition and just starting to mellow. The rear seats were removed to provide extra luggage space and, now refitted, show hardly any use. Matching door cards feature a raised 'B' detail and the steering wheel is string-bound.The engine bay is in wonderfully presented condition and obviously dominated by the near-monolithic triple-carburettored engine. Bills on file refer to further engine work being undertaken to the cam damper and to improve the cooling system by NDR Ltd. in 2017.A small quantity of paperwork is present with the car together with a current V5C Registration Certificate.

Brown, Royal Navy General Service 1962-2007, 1 clasp, Northern Ireland (Lt P T Brown RN); South Atlantic 1982, with rosette (Lt P T Brown RN HMS Antrim) mounted court-style as worn, nearly extremely fine (2) £700-£900 --- Provenance: Dix Noonan Webb, September 2002. Patrick Thomas Brown was promoted Lieutenant on 1 April 1975, and Lieutenant-Commander on 1 April 1983. H.M.S. Antrim, a County Class Guided Missile Destroyer, was commanded by Captain B. G. Young, D.S.O. As part of the advance-guard sent South, she played a prominent role in the recapture of South Georgia and assisted in the movement of S.A.S. troops. Between 20-21 May she led the Naval Forces in the Falkland Sound during the amphibious landings. At this time she was hit by a 1,000lb bomb delivered by a Dagger fighter-bomber. The bomb struck the flight deck, gashed two missiles in the magazine and came to rest in the Seaman’s After Heads, without exploding. In further attacks by Daggers she was sprayed with 30mm. shells causing two serious casualties. After 10 fraught hours the unexploded bomb was dealt with by C.P.O. Michael Fellows of the Fleet Clearance Diving Team; an action that was to earn him the D.S.C. As a result of the damage sustained the Antrim reverted to escort duties for the remainder of the campaign.

A scarce Second War ‘Madagascar operations’ M.M. awarded to Gunner W. Howell, Royal Artillery, who died in Madagascar on 1 June 1942 Military Medal, G.VI.R. (785314 Gnr. W. Howell. R.A.) second digit of number officially corrected, nearly extremely fine £1,400-£1,800 --- M.M. London Gazette 16 June 1942: ‘In recognition of gallant and distinguished services in Madagascar.’ The original Recommendation states: ‘On the morning of 6 May 1942, Driver Wilfred Howell was driving an Armoured OP to 29 Independent Brigade HQ - he was travelling at the rear of a convoy of Infantry Carriers. As the third carrier was passing through the road block at 075286, a 75mm gun opened fire on the road. The occupants of the carrier which was then passing through the road block dismounted from their carrier and left it almost completely blocking the road. The next two carriers turned back. Despite the fact that three shells burst alongside the Armoured OP, wounding a signaller, destroying the wireless set and setting the Armoured OP on fire, Driver Howell obeyed the orders of his BC, and by showing great coolness and skill drove his Arm OP straight on to safety where it had to be abandoned - burnt out.’ Wilfred Howell attested for the Royal Artillery and served with 9 Field Regiment during the Second World War in Madagascar. He died on 1 June 1942, aged 31, and is buried in Diego Suarez War Cemetery, Madagascar.

PMM 344; Ward & Carozzi 1408]Note: Note: Second edition of volume one, first editions of volumes two and three; volume one was first published in 1830. Lyell's revolutionary work is considered the foundational statement of what came to be known as the 'uniformitarian' school of geology, which in attributing geological phenomena to immutable laws challenged the prevailing 'catrastrophist' view which assumed the literal truth of the biblical narrative and found explanations in supernatural interventions, such as the great flood. The second volume concerned the organic realm and paved the way for Darwin in rejecting Lamarck's theory of the incessant mutability of species, 'arguing instead that they were real stable entities, and that they appeared and became extinct in a piecemeal manner in time and space' (ODNB).

Red Morocco and silver mounted stationery box, the silver embossed with shells, masks and scrolls by Goldsmiths & Silversmiths Co Ltd , London 1903 H 18cm W 29cm D 14cm. Provenance: From Munstead Wood. The contents of the property are being sold by the former owners of the important country house which has now been purchased by the national trust. Munstead Wood is a Grade I listed house and gardens in Godalming Surrey. The garden was created by garden designer Gertrude Jekyll and became very well-known through her designs, and her books and articles in magazines such as Country Life. The Arts and Crafts style house was built for Jekyll and she lived there until 1932, Munstead Wood was designed by the architect Edwin Lutyens to compliment the garden with Jekylls influence on the original design. Munstead Wood was the first, and perhaps therefore the most important, collaboration between Jekyll and Lutyens in garden and house design. These collaborations number around 120, with other well-known examples including Deanery Garden in Berkshire and Hestercombe House in Somerset. Jekyll transformed the site over the years, first meeting Lutyens at Munstead Wood in 1889 when the collaboration began, and she lived there until her death in 1932. Prior to the sale to the National Trust, Munstead Wood was the vendors family home for more than 50 years, the owners over this time were Sir Robert Clark and Lady Clark who were responsible for the house and gardens regeneration to return it to its original concept.
