However it was skill in wax modelling for which he was most recognized, “in wax modelling, Hardy achieved a position which has not been reached by anybody else. He started, following the taste of his time, with low reliefs of great men, portraying them with apt traits of nature and character. He also paid great attention to a natural moulding of material, especially of lace. He then continued with genre figures, full of psychological truth, and with idylls, which reveal the purest and tenderest sentiments†( E.J. Pyke, A Biographical Dictionary of Wax Modellers’, Oxford, 1973, p. 63). Admired for his talents, he found friends and patrons in Franz Ferdinand Wallraf (1748-1824), founder of the museum in Cologne, and Johann Wolfgang von Goethe (1749-1832) who acquired eight of Hardy’s wax figures, now on display in the Goethe Nationalmuseum in Schloss Tierfurt in Weimar. Two comparable works are in the collection of the Victoria and Albert Museum. Please refer to department for condition report

Aboriginal art Northern Australia, a stone tool with hardened gum handle length 19.5cm together with a string of cowrie shells on a plaited cord, four various strings of beans and two small mulga wood turned pots. (8)Provenance: From the Estates of Constance Mary Hazeldine (Hazel) Wheeler (nee Roberts) and Vincent Harold Roberts (Harry), born 18th November 1887. Thence by family descent. Harry Roberts served in the 9th Australian Light Horse from 26 October 1914 - 12 June 1919. Harry had a smallholding south of Melrose, in the Flinders Ranges, South Australia, with his wife Winifred. Sadly Winifred died, leaving Harry with their three very young daughters. Not knowing how to cope, Harry travelled by ship to visit his relatives in the U.K. It was decided that his niece, Constance Mary Hazeldine (Hazel) Wheeler (nee Roberts) would travel back with them to Australia to help look after her young cousins, her uncle and the smallholding. Hazel was just 16 years old. They set sail in 1928. Hazel stayed in Australia with her cousins and uncle for approximately 3 years. After which time Harry sold his smallholding and they all returned to the U.K. Harry and Hazel acquired and owned these Aboriginal artefacts while in Australia and brought them back upon their return to the U.K. The Aboriginal items are understood to be from the Arrernte People or Arunta tribe of the Arrernte Lands (Alice Springs) of the Northern Territory in Australia. Some were exhibited at the Budleigh Salterton Museum in Devon in 1984.
