A Japanese Lacquer Decorated Half Egg Shell Bowl, late Meiji period (1868-1912), internally decorated with three fish amongst chrysanthemums in tones of gold and silver against a black ground, externally with black squid and a slender fish amongst scattered sea shells, the whole raised on three shell carved feet, 6cm high, 14.8cm wide Some rubbing of the black ground on the interior background lacquer. Lacquer stress crack across the largest of the fish. 3cm crack in the egg shell on the rim. Rubbing of gilding on the rim and generally light rubbing and scuffing. All three of the shell carved feet (which are stained ivory) are good. Some scuffing of the shell gold lacquer. 210513

PROVENANCE; Given to Francis de Sales McHugh in 1933 when he was supervising the construction of a post office for the Queensland Department of Posts & Telegraphs , in New Guinea .
