A FINE PAIR OF HEAVY SILVER BOTTLE HOLDERS, Sheffield 1949, mark of Mappin & Webb Ltd, each of oval form, with flying leaf cast pouring handle above a scroll and shell rim, the body lightly engraved with a band of shells and bellflowers, supported on conforming stepped oval foot, (c.59 troy ozs all in). Each 25cm long over handle and spout. (2)
A FINE 18TH CENTURY CONTINENTAL FLINTLOCK FOWLING PIECE, the barrel in two stages with octagonal section engraved with panels and trailing foliage, with inset brass sight at the opposing end, the walnut stock extensively carved with foliate scrolls, the cheek piece inlaid with bone and horn star, decorated with applied gilt metal furniture, engraved with various game, scrolls and shells, with sliding ball compartment in the butt. AN IRISH GEORGE II GILTWOOD PIER MIRROR, fitted with bevelled glass plate below a scallop and swan neck crest, carved with ho-ho birds in relief above drapery and tassels, over a shell carved apron. 115 x 65cmThis mirror displays all the characteristics of Dublin flat carved work of the 1740s. The over scrolled broken pediment with extended corners, the motifs of opposing birds, the rosette and draped sides and the stylised cornucopia and Venus shells. There must have been a central workshop as so many of these mirrors are patently by the same carver. For analogous examples see Glin & Peill, Irish Furniture (2007), p.259
