A set of five George II butter shells by Edward Wakelin, (maker’s mark struck twice only), each engraved with a crest and on two shell feet, 10cm (4in) long, 748g (24.05 oz). The crest of GEERING, MONCASTER of Yorkshire, VARTY of Cumberland and WILLOUGHBY, Lord of the Manor of Willoughby, Lincs. (temps. William I), from whom descended the Barons WILLOUGHBY de ERESBY. Wakelin entered this mark on 17th November 1747. He entered into partnership with John Parker I after 1758 and certainly by 14th December 1761 when the partnership was self-styled Parker and Wakelin.. From the collection of Laurence W. Hodson (1863-1933) and descendants, thence by descent.
