An elegant 18th century Hepplewhite carved, painted and parcel gilt showframe sofa, the serpentine back over a serpentine fronted seat and channel and scroll carved swept arms, raised on a conforming rail and six cabriole style legs, headed by carved shells, with remnants of the original paint and parcel gilding, upholstered in gold silk damask, 77in. (195.5cm.) long, 36½in. (92.75cm.) high.* Provenance: Purchased from Bonhams Chelsea 'English and Continental Furniture' sale, 17th May 1994, Lot 196. Restored later that year by Lincoln Cato, Brighton at a cost of £2,100.

A Makonde body mask (Njorowe)Tanzania, carved to represent a pregnant woman's body, worn over the torso of a man impersonating female spirits, with five cowry shells above the protruding navel, flanked by crossed beaded string, with the circumference repeatedly pierced and wrapped with striped material, hollow carved, 12½in. (32cm.) high.
A large and fine royal Bamileke or Bamum beaded headCameroon, the highly expressive face probably representing the tribal chief (Fon), with rounded cheeks, flaring nostrils and other exaggerated features, the wooden carving decorated with multicoloured glass beads and cowry shells attached with mud cement, the head with carved buffalo horns representing power, encased with brass sheets and red and black discs, with snarling leopard of same material to crown, its tail leading to an open section on the reverse, revealing a hollow chamber connected to the pierced mouth and open carved base, sat on flaring cane collar, the head, despite its weight and size, was probably worn during important ceremonies, 37½in. (95cm.) high.
