A Victorian and Edwardian Windsor & Newton artist's watercolour set, in a mahogany and ebony strung case with brass escutcheon and campaign style handle to drawer below a lift lid opening to reveal a fitted interior with lift out trays and compartments, containing twenty five colour bricks and several further loose, chalks, two pottery palettes, six brushes of various shape, two pencils, ink pen, glass water bowl, ivory brush rest, two mussel shells half dipped in gold paint, additional home made card to keep paint in holder, and three Windsor & Newton paper colour charts, the box 28.5 by 16.5 by 7.5cm.

He was the youngest son of Frederick Ponsonby (1758-1844), 3rd Earl of Bessborough, and Lady Henrietta Spencer, daughter of the 1st Earl Spencer. He married Lady Barbara ASHLEY-COOPER on 8 August 1814. She was heiress of Anthony Ashley-Cooper (1761-1811), the 5th Earl of Shaftesbury, and co-heir of the medieval barony of Mauley. He was created 1st Baron de Mauley in 1838.

An early Victorian silver gilt circular sideboard dish or plaque by Edward Farrell, London 1838, the centre embossed with dogs attacking an animal, two figures looking on, perhaps the Death of Actaeon, the broad rim with panels of fruit and flowers, shells, scroll foliage, three later crests and an armorial, 50cm (19 1/2in) diameter, 1727g (55.5 oz) The crests and arms for ANSTRUTHER-GOUGH-CALTHORPE. The baronetcy was created in 1929 for Sir Fitzroy Hamilton Niall ANSTRUTHER-GOUGH-CALTHORPE (1872-1957). He adopted this surname 1910 (it had previously been LLOYD-ANSTRUTHER) after his marriage in 1898 to the Hon. Rachel GOUGH-CALTHORPE (1871-1951). The armorial contains no baronets coronet and as the arms are quartered and not impaled we would expect that the arms in the image to be those of his son and heir Sir Richard ANSTRUTHER-GOUGH-CALTHORPE (1908-1985), of Elvetham Hall in Elvetham, Hants., before his father’s death in 1929. The arms are confirmed by Burke’s Peerage.
A George III silver second course plate by Paul Storr from the Duke of Hamilton Russian Ambassadorial Service, London 1806, shaped circular with a raised gadrooned rim with shells and acanthus at intervals, engraved the Royal coat-of-arms and another beneath a ducal coronet opposite, 33cm (13in) diameter, 1457g (46.85 oz) The second arms are those of Alexander, 10th Duke of Hamilton and 7th of Brandon (1767-1852). A pair of silver mounted 50 bore cannon barrelled flintlock boxlock pocket pistols, by (John) Joyner, c 1765, 8” overall, turn off barrels 2½”, breeches with London proofs, one breech and barrel numbered “1”; frames signed “Ioyner, London” in Gothic scrolls; with sliding trigger guard safeties; flat sided bulbous walnut butts with silver butt caps embossed with grotesque masks and scallop shells and engraved crests of an armoured arm holding a spear, and inlaid with silver wire scrolls and scallop shell escutcheons. GWO & generally GC (one cock repaired, top jaws and screws replaced, slightly worn overall with patches of rust and marks to the barrels).

A mid-18th Century continental silver hilted small sword, blade 30.5 in., of flattened hexagonal section at the forte and with traces of engraved decoration including a well-realised running wolf within a panel to each side; cast hilt comprising boat-shell guard, finger rings and quillons, knuckle bow and globular pommel, all elaborately decorated with overlapping patterns of writhen fluting, waves and shells; later leather scabbard with engraved white metal fittings.
