Brass Shell Case Gong with Connection to Former New Zealand Tennis Player & Four Time Wimbledon Champion Anthony Wilding, the two brass shell cases with various stampings to the bottom are mounted onto a wooden frame with hooks screwed in to mount the brass shells. A handwritten label is written to the base, this is repeated on the top, “These two shell cases were acquired by me in or near the British Trenches just north of the La Bassee Road in the first quarter of 1916. One had been used as a “GAS” gong. At that time is was thought both by myself and others extremely probable that the shells had been used by Anthony Wilding the lawn tennis champion on 1914 in one of other of his nightly forays down the La Bassee road in the very early days of the 1914/18 war. When so we understood he bombarded enemy positions with Boer War six pounder guns mounted to Armoured Cars” the note is signed S G Campion. Stands 47cms high. Anthony Wilding was born on 31st October 1883. He is known as one of New Zealand’s greatest ever Tennis players. He won the Australian Open in 1906 and 1909. He won the Wimbledon championship four times, 1910, 1911, 1912 and 1913. He was killed on the Western front on the 9th May 1915. Please note we are not able to ship this item outside of the UK. The group is also accompanied by an Imperial Service Medal awarded to 'THOMAS JAMES WALLACE KING'. Stoker 1st Class Robert John George King was serving onboard the Battlecruiser HMS Indefatigable at the Battle of Jutland. Indefatigable was hit by shells to the stern resulting in her taking in water and beginning to sink, she was hit again and her magazines blew of the 1,019 crew only two would survive.Flight Sergeant Samuel King joined the RAF and volunteered for aircrew. He joined 461 (RAAF) Squadron flying the Short Sunderland Flying Boat out of Pembroke Docks. He was lost on operations on the 1st September 1942
