One of the most comprehensive collections we have seen with over 350 letters, many multi page, and very clear,(some staining to a few letters etc) cards, telegrams, photograph, signed menu, dried flowers from the battlefield etc. A previous owner has provided copies of the appropriate war diary for each group of letters and where other Officers are mentioned, often in the case of death in action there service details have been included. Contained in three large files for ease of reference, with large bag of additional items. Tom as he signs his letters to his wife was commissioned in June 1915 and his letters from the Western Front start in March 1916 "Darling Heart I am leaving here during the night to join my Battalion in the line...we had a man killed..last night.. I forgot to tell you we have the only brass band in the division and...it played us to the trenches. We had a very nerve wracking time last night and faced death a thousand times. (May 3rd) Counted forty-three shells burst within 20 yds of me... After the July 1st (1916) Attack on the Somme he writes "I am the only Officer left in my company now and I have lost all my chums in the recent fighting,..Lumsden, Clegg etc. Thank God we are giving it to the Hun right and left.. It almost seems more than a human being can stand.. their prisoners (German) are very miserable and are not worth wiping your boots on.. you know the dogs turned machine guns onto our wounded. He is hospitalised with a very serious case of Trench foot in November and returns to the UK in early 1917, only going back to the Front in December, this time with the 17th Battalion. Caught up in the German March Offensive "we managed to give them a very bad time, leave is stopped for the present" Wounded in the left calf in early April he is hospitalised again (St John Ambulance Brigade Hospital) and then onto London and that marks the end of his fighting career, though his letters continue to the end of the year. In summary an important and very large collection with supporting paperwork and war diary extracts.
