Pre-Columbian, southern Mexico and Guatemala, Maya, late Classic Period, ca. 700 to 900 CE. Amazing and exceedingly unique! Beautifully engraved with late Classic lord's heads and readable glyphs, the incised designs look from a distance like a swirling pattern mixed in with the the browns, reds, creams, and purples of the shells' surfaces. Size of each (approximate): 2.4" L x 1.05" W (6.1 cm x 2.7 cm)The type of shells carved in these examples is a lettered olive, found in shallow waters along the coast of the Gulf of Mexico. The lords heads in the designs show classic Maya markers of wealth: elaborate headdresses, feathers, jewelry. The three clearest glyphs all appear to be syllabary, probably spelling out a name or maybe a place. Provenance: Ex-Suk Family Collection, acquired in the 1960's and passed by descent Condition: Both are fragile, with small areas of loss - one with a chip on the base, the other with a chip to the center and surface wear. However, incised glyphs are clear over much of the surface. Roman, Imperial Period, ca. 1st to 6th century CE. An interestingly-shaped small transport amphora, without handles, of a local design rather than from a large mass manufacturer. It has a flat bottom, a slightly tapered body, and a rounded top with a tiny spout without a rim. This suggests that its contents were evaporative and needed to be protected - perhaps wine or some other alcohol? Size: 4.2" W x 13.1" H (10.7 cm x 33.3 cm)This amphora sank in a shipwreck, a common occurrence in the stormy Mediterranean, and lay underwater for centuries while sea life covered it; remains of shells and a sponge encrust its surface. This same sea life would have eaten away its cork and spilled its contents onto the sea floor, leaving the hard pottery behind for us to find. Provenance: Ex-Private San Francisco, CA collection Condition: Surface is almost fully encrusted with sea deposits; interior is full of deposits, giving it a heavy weight. All items legal to buy/sell under U.S. Statute covering cultural patrimony Code 2600, CHAPTER 14, and are guaranteed to be as described or your money back. A Certificate of Authenticity will accompany all winning bids. We ship worldwide and handle all shipping in-house for your convenience. #120053
South Pacific, Polynesia or Hawaii, ca. 19th century CE. Made of a smoothed grey-green basalt, with a rounded base and a slightly pronounced handle, this style of poi pounder is known as "knobbed". Size: 3.3" W x 6.25" H (8.4 cm x 15.9 cm)Poi pounders, alongside adzes, were the most important stone tools in pre-contact Polynesia and Hawaii (Europeans introduced steel weapons). They are used for pounding cooked taro root into po, a stable of the diet. Taro root was steamed in an earthen oven, peeled using shells, and placed onto a slab of wood to be pounded. The pounded results were blended with water into a highly nutritious paste. Traditional calabash bowls were used as containers to hold poi mixtures, and traveling royalty were accompanied by their own poi maker, with his or her own poi-making implements like this one. Provenance: Ex-Kalman Collection, Arcadia, CA; Ex-Jules Berman Collection, acquired before 1972. Condition: Areas of age loss and discoloration to surface as shown, with one larger loss on the lower body. #119880
Central Asia, Tibet, 19th century CE. A large drum from a Tibetan Buddhist temple, with a hand-carved and painted wooden body. The wooden edges of the drum are decorated with different symbols, among them shells, mandalas, lotus flowers, and fantastic animals. These are intended to give good fortune. Stretched across the drum is a nice leather surface - this instrument still makes a low, booming sound! It was made to be used in religious ceremonies. Size: 23" W x 45" H (58.4 cm x 114.3 cm) Provenance: Ex-Private Boulder, CO collection acquired at Indochine Gallery Condition: Wear to painted surface and drum skin, with small losses to the handle near where it meets the drum body. #117815
