Durchbrochen gearbeitete Fahne mit profiliertem Rand mit Muscheldekor. Zwei angeschraubte rocaillenförmige Handhaben. Im Spiegel und Handhaben punziert mit Silberstandard und verschlagener Tughra-Marke (wohl von Mahmud II., 1808 - 1839). Rückseite mit Tremolierstrich. Maße 61,5 x 39,5 cm, Gewicht 1966 g. World War One RAF Squadrons research and archive material, including a number of original photographs and documents relating to Flt Lt H.A. Denny RAF, a pilot with 206 Squadron. These materials were compiled by the current owner's father, a friend of Denny and a member of Cross and Cockade International, the WW1 aviation history society. Among the papers are letters between Denny and the original researcher, dated from the 1970s to the 1990s, as well as letters from other WW1 pilots. His research during the 1970s included trying to plot Mick Mannocks' last flight, as well as contacting and naming pilots from various squadrons. This lot also includes six World War Two photographs of a flight deck during strikes against Japan in 1945 including two crash landing planes. A quantity of more modern reprints of older RAF-related photographs fill out the collection, many annotated. Miscellaneous items include two 1915 German shells, two WWI training books, teak from HMS Ironstone card holder and more.
Medals (3) of 219941 Leading Seaman Arthur Edward Gartrell R.N. 1914-1915 Star, British War Medal 1914-1920, and Allied Victory Medal 1914-1918, mounted. Born in Plymouth, educated at Greenwich Naval School and served as a Boy aboard HMS St Vincent from 17th March 1902 until 5th October 1904 when posted to HMS Excellent. At the outbreak of the First World War was serving aboard HMS Superb, a Bellerophon-class dreadnought battleship, seeing action at the Battle of Jutland with the 3rd Division of the 4th Battleship Squadron Led by Admiral Sir John Jellicoe. HMS Iron Duke was followed by HMS Royal Oak, HMS Superb and then HMS Canada. At 19:20, she opened fire on the German battlecruiser Derfflinger and fired seven salvos in 4½ minutes with two claimed hits at 12,200 yards. During the battle, she fired 54 12-inch shells and received no damage. Promoted Leading Seaman on 11th February 1916 and remained aboard until 18th October 1916 when posted back to HMS Excellent. He was posted on 11th June 1919 to the Royal Yacht Victoria & Albert. Gartrell died in Hasler Hospital, Portsmouth, of pneumonia on 16th December 1925.
