He married, in 1804, Elizabeth JOHNSON (1781-1842) and it is likely to be this event that the salver was commissioned for. This particular branch of the Ridley family shares the arms of Baron Wensleydale (created 1756) and the later Viscounts Ridley (created 1900) and it is this noble branch of the Ridley family that I would suspect are the benefactors of the salver. The family John and Elizabeth are otherwise poorly documented and we note that there is lack of any noble augmentations as part of the engraving. Condition Report: Full marks under salver, border with standard and duty marksEngraving is crispLight scratches and wear commensurate with age and useCancelled marks were transposedCondition Report Disclaimer

AN ARCHIVE OF LETTERS AND PHOTOGRAPHS FROM LIUTENANT JOHN BOSTOCK RN. Two extensive albums of letters, photographs and documents, a unique archive from Midshipman, later Acting Lieutenant John Bostock R.N. who was present at the battle of the Flaklands and Jutland. The earliest letter is dated January 24th 1914 from HMS Cornwall which leaves Plymouth for Gibraltar on a tour which will travel until July. The numerous letters, some on headed paper with an image of the Cornwall, from this cruise are accompanied by various photographs. Bostock describing the Cornwall as 'quite an ordinary old County class' accounts of training with torpedoes, guns, battle practice and visits ashore. Present at the Spithead review in July 'we are in our proper place amongst all the old crocks'. On July 31st he wrote from Devonport 'if there is war we go South to protect commerce' ... 'I don't think there is any doubt as to the result ... I think Germany will be beaten pretty badly'. By September 8th 'we have not yet fired a shot ... [we did] capture 70 Germans & Austrians'. By the 25th of November he is remarking on the action of Coronel and the sinking of the Good Hope and Monmouth, commenting 'I think there is quite a good chance of getting into action sometime with the Scharnhorst' There follows his account of the Battle of the Falklands ending with 'Everyone was quite calm & my gun crew worked excellently even when the three shells hit just below the casement ...' a hand drawn map of the battle is included alongside a longer hand written and typed 'Account of Battle off Falkland Isles Dec 8th 1914. and a letter 'I must say I thoroughly enjoyed the whole action except the end when we were trying to get out the boats and it was freezing'. By April 1915 Bostock has joined Warspite and at sea by the 12th, after which follows a period where letters are taken up with thanks for cakes and fruit, talk of sidecars and uniform with occasional gunnery practice. Bostock sees significant action at Jutland and the battle is covered in an eleven page hand written account of the action. The Warspite played an important role at the battle of Jutland under Commander Humphrey Walwyn, famously losing control of her steering and circling dangerously close to the German fleet and in doing so drawing huge amounts of fire from the enemy. Bostock's report covers the battle in detail 'my own job is supervising the ammunition supply to the guns' accounts of shells hitting the ship and his lucky escape from injury, fighting fires, helping the wounded and shelling enemy ships. The account is followed in the album by a telegram, presumably to his mother reporting him 'safe and well'. Jutland seems to have been the highlight of his naval career and extracts from his report are included in Peter Hart and Nigel Steel's book Jutland 1916 Death in the Grey Wastes. Service aboard H.M.S. Medway, Walpole, Centurion, Ajax, the final letter in the collection being dated 24th June 1920.

A large Italian third quarter 18th century giltwood armchair or throne chairof Venetian originThe frames carved with acanthus, rocaille, flowers, shells, foliate wrapped C- and S-scrolls and a cabochon, surmounted by a Corno Ducale (Doge hat) and flanked to each end by an 'Atlas' putto, above volute scrolled arms, over a shaped seat frame centred by a lambrequin canopy, on 'Atlas' putto figural and C-scroll front legs, with cabriole rear legs terminating in scroll feet, the reverse applied with a small oval metal plate engraved: '7486', re-gilt, significant wear to the leather seat, 105cm wide x 96cm deep x 169cm high, (41in wide x 37 1/2in deep x 66 1/2in high)Footnotes:A related pair of Venetian 18th century giltwood side chairs, made for Paolo Renier (1710-1789), who served as the last Doge of Venice until his death in 1789, sold Christie's, London, 10 June 2004, Important European Furniture, lot 21. Also, a pair of side chairs evidently forming part of the same commission had previously sold Christie's London, 15 December 1994, lot 559.These comparables formed part of a suite of furniture which was originally supplied to Paolo Renier before 1779. This is known because a portrait of Renier dressed in his official robes as the newly appointed Doge, by Ludovico Gallina (now in the Museo Civico, Padua), depicts Renier with a console table and armchairs from this suite, while the painting itself dates to 1779. Both this oil on canvas, as well as two side chairs and one of the armchairs from the Renier suite, are illustrated in A. Gonzalez-Palacios, Il Tempio del Gusto, Le Art Decorative in Italia fra Classicismi e Barocco, Vol. II, fig.s 770-772 & 776, pp.'s 365-368. Of additional interest is another very similar Gallina portrait of Renier, depicted in 'full garb' as Doge, which is set within an elaborate contemporary carved giltwood frame crowned by a 'Corno Ducale' (or Doge's hat), that is very close in terms of its execution and relative size to the one surmounting the offered lot, Ibid, Vol. II fig. 778, p. 369. The Ca'Rezzonico and Cini Collection, both in Venice, house other chairs from this historic suite, whilst additional examples from the set can be seen at the Wallace Collection (illustrated in F.J.B. Watson, Wallace Collection Catalogues: Furniture, 1956, fig. 491-2, pl. 36) and other private collections. A further group of associated armchairs were sold as part of the Donna delle Rose Collection, Venice, 1934, lots 364-371. In this sale catalogue, G. Lorenzetti and L. Planiscig dated the suite to the first quarter of the 18th century and attributed its execution to the sculptor Antonio Corradini (1688-1752) due to the stylistic similarities between this furniture and fragments of the last state barge (Bucintorr), which was also claimed to be by Corradini. However, Alvar González-Palacios suggests that the suite is unlikely to be by Corradini but instead it could be the output of a single anonymous workshop, also dating the work to the third quarter of the 18th Century, by which time Corradini had died, Ibid, Vol. I, fig. LIV, pp.'s 333-341.LiteratureA. Registration No: RNM 978RChassis No: 2H-1873BWMOT: 10 November 2022Rare and desirable Daimler Sovereign 4.2 CoupeSubject to photographically documented restoration in 1992 and more recently a full engine overhaul in 2019Offered with 48,266 miles on the odometer and an MOT certificate valid until 10 November 2022 The Daimler Sovereign was a name applied to a sequence of luxury cars built by Jaguar but carrying the Daimler badge between 1966 and 1983 and were based on contemporary Jaguar body shells, chassis and engines. The launch of the Jaguar XJ6 in 1968 and its Daimler sister in 1969 redefined expectations in the luxury car sector. The new model truly 'moved the goalposts', setting new standards in comfort, refinement and handling. A waiting list was quick to form and enthusiasm remained strong upon the introduction of the Series II cars in 1973. The standard or long wheelbase saloon models were joined later that year by a striking new variant; an elegant pillarless coupé, all being built on the short-wheelbase chassis with a black vinyl-covered roof and available with either the 4.2 litre straight-six XK unit or the 5.3 litre, V12. This handsome design retained the saloon's supple all-round independent coil and wishbone suspension, disc brakes and power steering. Performance was predictably strong with both variants reputedly able to exceed 120mph. Rarer than its Jaguar brother, just 1,677 Daimler Sovereign 4.2 Coupés are thought to have been produced by the time production ended in 1978 with 613 built in 1977 and only six in the final year. Presented in red with cream contrasting leather interior, this Daimler Sovereign 4.2 Coupe underwent photographically documented restoration in 1992, including replacement floor, inner and outer sill, bulkhead, lower quarter panel, wheel arches, a full respray and interior refurbishment at a cost of approximately £6,000.In 2019, RNM 978R was subject to a full engine overhaul and more recently a reconditioned gearbox and torque converter, as well as replacement petrol tanks, brake lines, fuel lines and engine tuning. Currently showing just 48,266 miles on the odometer, included with the vehicle is a large number of paperwork including photographic history of the restoration, a number of previous invoices and the V5 Document. The vendor rates the condition of the transmission and gearbox and electrical equipment as ‘Very Good’, with the bodywork, paintwork, engine and interior trim as ‘Excellent’.Footnote: For more information, please contact:Andreas Hicksandreas.hicks@handh.co.uk07943584762

Registration No: YYO 13HChassis No: 1233645MOT: ExemptOffered with history file76,300 recorded milesFinished in Dark Blue complimented with a Black leather interiorFinished in a lustrous eye-catching shade of dark blue complimented by a black interior, this UK market Interceptor II was first registered on 27 February 1970. The subject of bodywork restoration and a repaint plus an engine overhaul carried out c.2009, YYO 13H registers some 76,300 recorded miles and benefits from a substantial history file including a collection of invoices, old MOT’s, tax discs and Cropredy Jensen specialist inspection report. In addition, the original Interceptor handbook and a large amount of service history are included, along with the original purchase documents from December 1969 – January 1970.The vendor advises the last service was carried out in April 2019 at 74,885 miles. This entailed replacement of the V8’s spark plugs, as well as the engine oil and filter. In March 2018, the spark plugs, distributor, coil pack, alternator and regulator had been replaced at 74,883 miles along with a mechanical service. Prior to this, the spark plugs, engine oil and filters were previously replaced in May 2017 at 74,836 miles.Jensen's C-V8 replacement debuted in 1966 reviving a name first employed in the 1950s. However, several of the firm's traditions were broken in that the design was outsourced to Carrozzeria Touring and the bodies made of steel not glass fibre. Early shells were built in Italy, by Vignale, prior to production being established at Jensen's Kelvin Way plant in West Bromwich. Power came from a 6276cc (383ci) Chrysler V8, driving through either a four-speed manual or three-speed TorqueFlite automatic transmission to an LSD Salisbury rear axle. Specification included electric windows, reclining seats, wood-rim steering wheel, radio with twin speakers, electric clock and reversing lights. MKI production ran for three years before being supplanted by the MKII. The MKIII followed two years later and was still in manufacture when Jensen entered receivership during 1976, by which time some 6,408 Interceptors had been built. The present lot was probably made by the firm Lenygon & Morant, who were established in Old Burlington St in 1915, after the purchase of Dunecht House in 1909 by Sir Weetman Pearson, later Baron Cowdray (1910) and Viscount Cowdray (d. 1927). Baron Cowdray employed the architect Aston Webb to aggrandise Dunecht House and it is likely the bed was part of this reburbishment. (M. Hall, 'Dunecht House, Aberdeenshire,' Country Life, 15 August 1991, pp. 54-57 and 22 August 1991, pp. 40-43). The accompanying heraldic head-cloth [not photographed with the bed] is in the 'Louis Quatorze' antique or arabesque fashion, and has a pearly white ground polychromed with flowered Roman acanthus and golden ribbon trellis. This frames a beribboned palm-and-laurel enriched escutcheon that displays a three-barred red, white and gold armorial in a lozenged compartment. Venus-shells embellish its baldequin and spandrels as well as the escutcheon pedestal, which is garlanded and accompanied by convulvulus-entwined roses and large 'Indian'/ Chinese flowers.
