Lot 12

A fine and rare William and Mary double-horizontal carved Portland stone and bronze sundial circa 1690 inscribed and constructed for latitude 52° 24’ N., bearing the Arms and motto of the Cornwallis family, signed Henricus Wynne Londini Fecit, the dial plate seated on three bronze bearings upon a Portland stone plinth with octagonal top and four volute supports with acanthus terminals flanking scallop shells, on moulded square base Sundial 69cm.; 27in diameter, plinth 130cm.; 51ins high The double-horizontal sundial, as the name implies, is a dual instrument, its principal features comprising a ‘double’ gnomon and complementary hour-scales on the dial plate. The primary instrument is the fiducial edge of the inclined or sloping part of the gnomon, which, when the sundial is correctly set, lies parallel to the earth’s polar-axis and aligned in the north/south plane of the meridian and the shadow of which indicates the time against the outer hour-scale on the dial plate, in hours and minutes. The secondary instrument is the sharp vertical edge of the triangular-shaped support to the gnomon, which lies in the axis of the observer’s zenith, and the shadow of which indicates the position of the sun at the point where the straight edge of the shadow intersects the hour-line on a planispheric projection of the celestial sphere, corresponding to the time indicated on the main dial. This observation provides various astronomical data, including the sign of the zodiac in which the sun is situated, the times of sunrise and sunset, the length of the day in terms of the number of hours in the day from sunrise to sunset, the altitude and azimuth (direction) of the sun, together with the means to determine the time when certain ‘fixed’ stars would transit the meridian. The Cornwallis double-horizontal sundial has a floreated gnomon, seated on a sheet-brass dial plate, which is affixed to a cast-bronze base by means of ‘hidden’ rivets. The dial plate is engraved with various scales and tables, the primary hour-scale in the outer ring being graduated in hourly, ten-minute, five-minute and one-minute intervals, within which there are inner rings calibrated to indicate direction in terms of azimuth or bearing. The planispheric projection is also engraved with an inner and outer hour-scale, to facilitate its use, being graduated with hour-angle divisions (meridians) and parallels of declination to the limits of 23½ degrees north or south of the celestial equator or equinoctial line. Two engraved arcs, representing the ecliptic, the apparent path of the sun, extend from the points where the 6 o’clock meridians or hour-circles cut the equinoctial and graze the north/south extremities of the projection at the tropics of Cancer and Capricorn. The signs of the zodiac are inscribed at their respective intervals along these two arcs. At the east/west extremities of the projection there are date-scales, graduated in months and days, whereby the date may be determined from an observation. Conversely, the date being known, the sundial may be readily be orientated and aligned in the meridian, without recourse to the more usual and protracted methods involved in setting up an ordinary common or garden horizontal dial. Other scales engraved on the dial include a semi-circular lunar hour-scale (situated within the arc of the inner hour-scale of the planispheric projection), by which the time may be deduced from an observation of the moon, and two sets of altitude scales, for use with a pair of compasses or dividers. The names of certain fixed stars are inscribed within the boundaries of these scales, together with the values of their respective hour-angles or angular distances measured eastwards of the so-called first point of Aries, the vernal equinox. On the planispheric projection this is the point, at the eastern extremity of the grid system,

Plate 3 Note: Anthony Gadd began his distinguished RAF career in 1935 at the age of 27 and was soon serving at Gosport with the Torpedo Development Unit (8.2.1937-28.12.40) where he was involved with experimental work on aerial torpedoes, (a log book entry shows “Dropped 1018 torpedoes up to 18/8/1940”) He then went to No 22 (TB) Squadron (at North Coates, Thorney Island and St Eval). From 7.1.1942 to 10.6.1943 he served with the Royal Australian Air Force returning to No 132 O.T.U. Squadron at East Fortune on 28.9.1943. Following a brief spell at RAF Station Tain he returned to RAF North Coates as Wing Commander Flying. On 25.8.1944 he was posted to 144 Squadron at Strubby Lincolnshire before serving at Banff and Dallachy until 25.7.1945. He then was posted to HQ Coastal Command on anti shipping ops from 25.7.1945 until 23.9.1945, thence to Naval Tactical School Greenwich; RAF Benson; 42 (TB) Squadron and 58 (PR) Squadron. On 15th June 1944 Gadd led a strike wing against a convoy off Schiermonnikoog, near Borkum. Dutch resistance had given intelligence that a convoy was to leave port, the convoy comprised two large vessels (the Merchant vessel Amerskerke and one depot ship) escorted by 18 R boats and minesweepers. GaddÂ’s log book shows “Strike. 1M/V 8000 tons 1 M/V 6000 tons, 9 “M” class minesweepers, 6 R/boats off Borkum. 43 A/C: 14/254 12/489 12/455 5/236. 1 Sqdn Mustangs. Self leading. Formed up in dark (1st light) set course 0500...flying over low cloud varying 1/10-9/10ths. Target sighted...SÂ’board Sqdn shot at by coastal batteries just before attack. Managed to get wing round on to a better angle commenced attack from 2,300Â’ owing to cloud, achieved considerable surprise. Sank both M/Vs and one M class, seriously damaged 6 more with two more damaged. Two R/boats seriously damaged. Flak not intense but collected explosive shell in fin and rudder” For this action Gadd was awarded the DFC (London Gazette 7th July 1944 Wing Commander Anthony Gadd (37557) R.A.F.O. “Within recent months this officer has taken part in numerous attacks on shipping. He has displayed a high degree of skill and courage and throughout his example of devotion to duty has been most praiseworthy. In June 1944, he led a large formation of aircraft in an attack on a large merchant vessel and a naval auxiliary escorted by a number of minesweepers and R-Boats. In the fight, the large merchant vessel and a minesweeper were destroyed, the naval auxiliary hit and beached and several of the escorting ships damaged. By his brilliant leadership and great tactical skill Wing Commander Gadd played a prominent part in the success achieved.”. On 9th October 1944 he took part in an attack on a German convoy off S.W. Coast of Norway, an extract from HQCC gives the following details “The foreign press announced ‘Berlin 10.10.44 Escort vessels and Flak of a German convoy off the South West coast of Norway yesterday morning brought down 9 enemy aircraft in 7 minutes. Further enemy aircraft were probably destroyed...In the fierce battles with the aircraft which attacked in several waves, 5 more aircraft were brought down, and 2 German launches were sunk. Some of the remaining aircraft were set on fire, and were last seen flying low over the sea, so they may be presumed to have been destroyedÂ’ below which it continues ‘The True Story: 18 Beaufighters and 8 Mosquitoes attacked a convoy of 5 merchant vessels and 6 escort vessels off Egersund on 9th October. Two merchant vessels and a T.T.A were severely damaged and possibly sunk, and an escort vessel and merchant vessel left on fire. Three Beaufighters suffered from damage, but there were no casualties and all aircraft returned to base.” On 8th November 1944 Gadd led a Strike to Midtgulen Fjord “Led force in over 3,500Â’ snow covered mountains, both M/Vs left on fire, one after big explosion forÂ’ard, steam and smoke up to 300Â’ Other 3 two of which were armed trawlers badly shot up with cannon and left smoking. Owing to mountains had to make steep dive from 4000Â’ Narrowness of fjord and ricochets of own cannon shells made attack difficult, if not a little dicey..” again his own plane received some damage. The merchant ships were the Helga Ferdinand and Aquila both shown in the log book as sunk. A third vessel, Framnaes was also damaged in the attack, this proved to be a Norwegian civilian vessel. On February 1st 1945 Gadd was awarded the bar to his DFC (London Gazette announcement February 2nd 1945). His log book also notes 12th May 1945 “Escorting HMS Devonshire on route to Oslo with Crown Prince of Norway.”The Goldfish Club was formed in 1942 by the rubber company P.B Cow, who manufactured Mae West life jackets and rubber dinghies, with membership being open to the service men who ditched in the sea; by the end of WWII there were over 9000 members, the badge was of embroidered cloth due to the prohibition of production of wire badges during the war.
