Group Captain Gilbert Stuart Martin Insall VC MC signed 1970 The Victoria Cross, National Army cover set with corner mounts into an A4 biography page. On 7 November 1915 near Achiet-le-Grand, France, Second Lieutenant Insall, on patrol in Vickers F.B.5 Gunbus No. 5074 with 1st Class Air Mechanic T. H. Donald, engaged an Aviatik two-seater and forced the German pilot to make a rough landing in a ploughed field. Seeing the air crew scramble out and prepare to fire, Insall dived to 500 ft and his gunner opened fire, whereupon the Germans fled. After dropping an incendiary bomb on the downed German aircraft, Insall flew through heavy fire at 2000 ft over enemy trenches. The Vickers' petrol tank was hit, but Insall brought the plane 500 yards back inside Allied lines for an emergency landing. Insall and Donald stayed by the Gunbus through a bombardment of about 150 shells while awaiting nightfall. After dark, they then set to work by torch light to salvage their plane. After they repaired the machine overnight, Insall flew them back to base at dawn. Good Condition. All autographed items are genuine hand signed and come with a Certificate of Authenticity. We combine postage on multiple winning lots and can ship worldwide. UK postage from £4.99, EU from £6.99, Rest of World from £8.99.

A George II silver shaped circular salver by Richard Rugg I, London 1754, the raised moulded border with shells at intervals, engraved with an armorial and on three stepped pad feet, 33cm (13in) diameter, 948g (30.5 oz)The arms here are those of a married woman, the wife of a member of the FODON or FODEN family. In the 17th century the main paternal arms are recorded in the Staffordshire Herald's Visitation of 1680 and were granted 1664 to Thomas Foden of Fulford, Staffordshire. The family were derived from the ancient FODON family of Fodon Cheshire. The same arms are also later used by the Fodon family of Market Overton, Rutland.  The Fodon family are very poorly documented in the eighteenth century and later and many family members emigrated to America and still later to New Zealand. As a result of this it is not possible to identify the arms of the father of the married woman displayed in pretence, to whom she was the heir.  Condition Report: Marks are partially obscuredSlightly warpedStands wellEngraving is crispPossible solder repair to footLight scratches and wear commensurate with age and use Condition Report Disclaimer

'The train left at 12.35, and as my car was a rear one, I had a most remarkable Panorama of Farewells. Every emotion seemed to blaze out in fierce truth as the men really left for the front, on the faces of the women - and others - who were left in a long row on the platform, grief, anxiety, gaiety, relief, bravado, indifference, the whole gamut of feeling...Captain Rees arrived at about 12, very shaky and nervous, a combination of old Trench fever and cigarette smoking (he smokes sixty a day) and not, for the moment, companionable...the moon and stars had come out and shone through the mist, the blazing ammunition dump bursting up every now and then into new flames, green flashes all along the horizon from the heavy guns at the Front...a land ploughed up by shells into billows and waves of earth, into what seemed to me to be the Hinterland of Hell.'
