1st-2nd century A.D. From the upper part of a vessel with two hippocampi (one partial) and a standing figure of a Nereid, floral and foliage decoration to the field, ornamental upper border; repaired. Cf. Beutler, F. et al., Der Adler Roms. Carnuntum und die Armee der Cäsaren, Bad-Deutsch-Altenburg, 2017, item 697, for similar fragment.77 grams, 12 cm (4 3/4 in.). Acquired 1960s-1990s. From the late Alison Barker collection, a retired London barrister The complete vessel probably represented scenes linked with the cult of Poseidon and Amphitrite. The riches of the sea and the dangers of navigation were merged by the ancients into a myth of great fame known as the wedding procession between Poseidon - brother of Zeus and Hades, god of the sea and the Nereid Amphitrite. The Nereids were the divinities of the sea, grandchildren of the ocean. Like the nymphs, all the Nereids were beautiful young women who spent their time singing or weaving. Also involved in the procession were the tritons and hippocampi, who provocatively played shells or were ridden by Nereids. [No Reserve]

Supplied new to British actor Robin Ellis, this outstanding Interceptor II has been beautifully restored with absolute attention to detail and will continue to turn heads for another 50 years.Jensen's C-V8 replacement debuted in 1966 reviving a name first employed in the 1950s. However, several of the firm's traditions were broken in that the design was outsourced to Carrozzeria Touring and the bodies made of steel not glass fibre. Early shells were built in Italy, by Vignale, prior to production being established at Jensen's Kelvin Way plant in West Bromwich. Power came from a 6,276cc (383ci) Chrysler V8, driving through either a 4-speed manual or 3-speed TorqueFlite automatic transmission to an LSD Salisbury rear axle. Specification included electric windows, reclining seats, wood-rim steering wheel, radio with twin speakers, electric clock and reversing lights. Production of the Interceptor II (occasionally called the Mk.II or Series II) commenced in October 1969 and lasted for two years. This particular car has a chassis prefix, #123, so was one of 694 right-hand drive, UK-cars powered by the E-Series 383ci V8 generating around 330bhp. It was first registered in the spring of 1970 and supplied new to British actor, Robin Ellis, best known for playing the leading role in the BBC series, Poldark, based on the novels of Winston Graham. Purchased for just under £8,000 or the equivalent of £150,000 in today’s money, the Jensen was a serious car for special customers.Several enthusiastic owners enjoyed the Jensen over the years until 2015 when the decision was made to completely restore it. The car's condition today is testament to the outstanding workmanship of the specialist team commissioned to complete the restoration and we understand that this glorious long-legged GT performs as well as it looks. The provenance and history of the Jensen is supported by a large history file containing the factory pre-sale inspection documents and paperwork which confirms that its first owner, Robin Adair Ellis, took delivery of the car on 6th May 1970. Also within the file is a detailed account of the restoration with supporting documentation, the current V5C ready for transfer or export, old MOT Certificates, the Heritage Certificate and a wealth of invoices for care and maintenance over the years, with the most recent service carried out in January 2023. Although exempt, the current MOT is valid until 1 February 2024.Finished in a lovely shade of very pale grey, the Jensen continues to attract all the right attention and, as a well restored and very well-maintained example, should only require basic maintenance. A rare blend of Italian styling, an American engine and British craftsmanship, these big GTs are comfortable and relatively practical with rear seats and a decent boot. It’s a beautiful British classic that will undoubtedly be the talking point at any classic car show or event the new owner wishes to take it to.SpecificationMake: JENSENModel: INTERCEPTOR IIYear: 1970Chassis Number: 1233736Registration Number: SUX 879HTransmission: AutomaticDrive Side: Right-hand DriveMake: RHDInterior Colour: BlackClick here for more details and images
A well restored example of one of the most exciting hot hatches to emerge from the late 1970s.The Talbot Sunbeam Lotus was originally conceived when Chrysler Group's competition manager, Des O'Dell, decided that there was a need for the company to create a car that would be competitive in International 'Group 4' rallying. The Sunbeam 1.6 GLS appeared to be their most relevant product, so he approached Lotus and offered them one as a basis. Lotus Engineering rose to the challenge and within a couple of months had developed the GLS into a potential winner. As well as their expertise, Lotus' supplied the 2.2 type-911 version of their 16-valve, four-cylinder engine coupled to a 5-speed ZF dog-leg gearbox, and also engineered a number of chassis and exhaust system improvements aimed squarely at beating the dominant Escort RS and Vauxhall Chevette HS/HSRs at their own game.Lotus' efforts were rewarded in 1980 when a Sunbeam piloted by Henri Toivonen won the RAC Rally of Great Britain, and indeed, this would be the last time a rear-wheel-drive car ever took the title. In 1981, the Constructor's World Championship was claimed by Sunbeam for the newly christened 'Talbot' team (having been renamed by new owners Peugeot in 1979).Homologation rules at the time dictated that for a new car to be eligible to compete internationally, it would also have to be offered to the general public and sold in a specified minimum number. In order to comply with this requirement, Talbot set up a separate production line at their Linwood factory to fabricate the body shells which would then be shipped directly to Ludham Airfield where Lotus would fit the engine, suspension, and gearbox etc. These road-going Talbot Sunbeam Lotus 'homologation specials' were more than just fast, they certainly looked the part as well. Initially, they were offered only in Embassy Black with Silver stripes and sporting a brace of Marchal spotlights and bespoke 'double four-spoke' cast alloy wheels. Launched to an eager public in 1979, the 2,174cc twin-cam engine, breathing through twin Dell'Orto carburetors developed 150bhp and delivered excellent performance.Finished in Embassy Black and Silver, this Talbot Sunbeam Lotus was originally supplied to Jersey and was first registered on 1st April 1979. It's a matching numbers car and is in superb condition throughout having been fully restored and upgraded in recent years. With a high-quality finish in mind, the car's current custodian has completed a no-expense rebuild with a full engine overhaul by Andrew Jones at Shrigley Engineering which included a Tony Law manifold and a lightweight flywheel and clutch. Further upgrades include a Quaife differential, a suspension upgrade incorporating Gaz front coil-overs, Bilstein rear dampers and improved braking with Wilwood front brake calipers. It should also be noted that competition-style front seats are currently fitted with the originals to accompany the car should they be required, however, these will require refinishing prior to being refitted.Despite dating from the late 1970s, these little Sunbeams are still considered a truly thrilling drive, set apart from most by their rear-wheel drive balance, beautifully weighted controls, overall lightness and surprisingly rapid pace.NB: Please note, this vehicle has arrived in the UK under ‘temporary admission’, upon successful sale and if remaining in the UK, the seller has agreed to settle import taxes due and obtain ‘NOVA Certification’ to enable UK registration.SpecificationMake: TALBOTModel: SUNBEAM LOTUSYear: 1979Chassis Number: R4OC79L1S81175Registration Number: UNREGISTEREDTransmission: ManualEngine Number: DC91179059115817SEDrive Side: Right-hand DriveOdometer Reading: 66000 MilesMake: RHDInterior Colour: Black / GreyClick here for more details and images

GEORGES PAUL LEROUX (FRENCH, 1877-1957)Soldiers signed 'GeORGeS LeROUX' (lower left) oil on canvas 81 x 105cm ARR Provenance Purchased in a brocante in Saint-Valery-sur-Somme, France, circa 2005 by the current ownerFootnoteBorn in Paris in 1877, to parents with strong connections to Trelly in Normandy, Georges Paul Leroux undertook his formal art training first at the Ecoles des Arts Decoratifs and then under Leon Joseph Bonnat (1883-1922) at the Ecoles des Beaux-Arts in Paris. A frequent exhibitor at the Salon des Artistes Francaise, he was awarded the 3rd Class Medal in 1903 and, in 1906, the Prix de Rome, which enabled him to stay at the Villa Medici in Italy from 1907-1909. In 1908 Leroux was awarded the Chevalier de la Legion d'Honneur. In 1911 he won a 2nd Class Medal and in 1932 was elected as a member of the L'Institut de France.Today, Leroux's works can be found in private collections as well as major galleries and museums, including the Imperial War Museum, the Petit Palais in Paris, and the Musee Departemental de l'Oise in Beauvais.During the First World War, Leroux served in the French army and saw action on the Western Front, in France and Belgium. These experiences lead him to paint various pictures of soldiers and war. It is understood, for example, that when out on a reconnaissance mission he saw 'a group of French soldiers taking shelter in a great shell hole full of water', and later that evening started making sketches of what he had seen, which later lead to perhaps his most famous work, L'Enfer (Hell), completed in 1921 and now in the collection of The Imperial War Museum (Art.IWM ART 4415).In the present work, of French soldiers marching, one might assume it was painted during a similar period to L'Enfer, in those years that followed the end of the First World War after 1918, drawing on Leroux's earlier experiences. Clearly French, due to the blue uniforms they wear, it appears as though they are near, or have been near The Front, as one soldier to the left wears a pair of brown German boots, presumably acquired from a German soldier on the battlefield, as opposed to his own. Leroux presents us with an engaging composition, not dissimilar to the one used in Gassed by John Singer Sargent, as a line of men cross the canvas from left to right. Leroux places the viewer close to the men, as if they were stood on the edge of the path watching them go by, with only half a man visible to the extreme left and right sides, out of the viewers field of vision, as they march past. This provides us with a study of a small group of soldiers whilst also reminding us of the almost continuous procession of men sent to war, bringing to mind works by C. R. W. Nevinson. In some ways it is a painting of juxtapositions, the soldiers are marching through a beautiful landscape, with glimpses of ploughed fields and woodland, set against a huge sky full of billowing clouds with pockets of blue above, in stark contrast to the atrocities of war. However, these same clouds, so dominant in the picture, also remind the viewer of the smoke from exploding shells and the oppressive nature of it, the ploughed brown fields are perhaps reminiscent of the mud enveloped, desolate landscape found at The Front.None of the men are wounded and they do not appear particularly dirty as if they have spent weeks in the trenches. They are clearly singing, all with their mouths open; one holds a pipe, as another one, with a bandaged rifle and the German boots, strains forward, determined to keep going. One wonders where they are going, out to, or coming home from, The Front? Perhaps this is deliberately ambiguous? Taken as a whole, Soldiers is a stunning and rare work, evocative of the period and layered with meaning.
