CIRCLE OF TINGQUA (JUAN) LIANCHANG (c. 1809-1870) "Conchological studies", 12 pages, depicting 64 studies of sea shells, watercolours on rice paper, bears inscription "Tingqua" to inside leaf, housed in a woven fabric covered folio, 23 cm x 32 cm CONDITION REPORTS The cover is of woven fabric (not embroidered). The blue fabric ribbon edging which holds the rice paper pictures in place is creased and faded and ribbon is separating from backing pages in most cases. The rice paper pictures have some wear and a few stains, some splits and holes, and some areas of loss. The rice paper does not appear to be stuck down - it appears to be held in place to the backing pages by the blue ribbon surrounds. Colours of paintings generally appear quite good. The ribbon surrounds appear to have protected the edges of the rice paper from the worst of the wear. Some of the rice paper paintings have some quite large areas of holes and losses and splits (please see photos). The folio / album itself is in very poor and disintegrating condition with the edges of the backing pages / leaves of the folio very worn, discoloured, with tears, losses and fragility to the edges.
