A silver dish and cover on stand, by Joseph Wilson or John Wakefield, London 1822/23, engraved with the Marital Arms of Campbell and Hale, the cover with a bird finial and profusely decorated with cast and chased leaves, flowers and rocaille scrolls and shells, 26cm diameter, 14cm high, 35ozt (3)These armorial bearings denote the marshalling of a marital coat showing the arms of the husband over the entire surface of the shield, whilst the arms of the wife as a heraldic heiress are placed on a small shield (known as an escutcheon of pretence) centrally on the husband's arms. These arms undoubtedly commemorate the marriage of Hugh Montgomery Campbell (baptised 7 January 1794, died 30 May 1846), of the Hollies, Stourbridge in the County of Staffordshire and Mary Hale (baptised 7 November 1796, died December 1842). Hugh and Mary were married at the Parish Church of St Mary, Enville in the County of Staffordshire on the 12 July 1821. Hugh was the third son of Archibald Montgomery Campbell and his wife, Ann Humphries, whilst Mary was the only daughter and heiress of John Hale Esq. of The Hollies aforesaid and his wife, Polly Devey. Hugh was a member of a cadet branch of the family of Campbell of Barrichbeyan in the County of Argyllshire through the Ballachlavan and Askomel lines of the family. He was educated at St John's College, Cambridge graduating with a Bachelor of Arts degree in 1818. The 1841 Census for England and Wales states the Hugh was of independent means. The hallmarking of this dish and cover on its stand meshes in well with the marriage of Hugh and Mary. Undoubtedly it was acquired a year or two after their marriage.Condition ReportLight wear in places, the marks largely clear makers mark slightly obscured. All components hallmarked - the cover is marked beneath the finial. The base bearing the same marks as the body. The cover does not sit entirely flush to the body. Light surface wear. Some scratches to base of dish and base, as well as to the part of the base upon which the dish sits. Some very minor dings, dents and small polishing holes. Please see photos.

Lalique France, n.3009".Very slight chipping on the side.Work reproduced in "Le Catalogue Raisonné del L'Ouvre en Verre de R. The piece is an exceptional combination of translucent and opalescent glass, the latter in a shade of blue in keeping with the marine theme. The Lalique firm was originally founded by René Jules Lalique (1860 - 1945), one of the foremost glassmakers of the time, and one of the first to sculpt glass for large monumental works such as the fountains on the Champs Elysées. He enjoyed great renown for his original creations of jewellery, perfume bottles, glasses, plates, etc., in the Art Nouveau and Art Deco styles. He trained with the Parisian jeweller Louis Aucoq, and then continued his studies at Sudenham Art College in London. The excellence of his creations and the taste he applied to his work earned him important commissions for the interior decoration of ships, trains such as the Orient Express, churches such as Saint-Nicasius in Reims, and numerous religious and civil goldsmiths' works. Lalique was not content with simply designing his models, but also founded a factory to produce them in large quantities, patenting several innovative glass manufacturing processes, and various technical effects such as "Lalique satin" or opalescent glass. Pieces by Lalique are preserved in prominent museums such as the Corning Museum of Glass and the Metropolitan Museum of Glass in New York, the Louvre and the Orsay Museum in Paris, among many others.
