A Circa 1760 to 1770's Bone Fan, with double paper leaf, mounted on pierced and carved sticks, a vase and flowers painted on the guard and a simple painted flower spray sweeping across the gorge. The leaf is découpé, along the top border and a section of the sides, with quite intricate flowers and foliage. The centre of the leaf depicts an Oriental lady wearing pink robes and a child wearing blue robes, beside a table on which is placed a vase. The lady carries a fan. The leaf also depicts shells and sea vegetation, and a fish or dolphin. The verso is plain. Guard length 29cmDamage to the découpage mainly to the right of centre, some soiling to the leaf, and nicks to the folds.
Paris and Oenone: A Mid-18th Century Ivory Fan, the sticks carved, pierced and painted in autumnal colours. Both guards feature a figure and background scrolling, the gorge more elaborate, decorated with a central pastoral carving of a seated lady pointing to a man playing a pipe, several sheep to his side. A vignette to the left depicts two cherubs and one to the right is carved with a bird stealing fruit from a bowl. Oenone was a mountain nymph with whom Paris fell in love when he was a shepherd on the slopes of Mount Ida. They married, only for Oenone to be abandoned when Paris returned to Troy to take Helen the Queen of Sparta. Oenone then predicted the Trojan War. The double paper leaf shows Oenone in white with a vivid blue shawl and Paris in beige and lilac, under the shade of a tree, a small winged cherub pulling at her skirts. Behind Paris, who appears to be marking initials on the tree, a hovering Cupid is about to shoot his arrow. To the right, an overflowing fountain holds two tiny embracing cherubs. The reserves are painted in fresh blues with pink carnations and hints of gold, a bird and shells decorating a floral outer border. A solitary lady in pink graces the verso, at rest, having gathered a posy of blue flowers which complement the ribbon in her hair. A fresh and airy floral border decorates the edges an upper reserves. Guard length 28cmSlight foxing to the verso.

Lawrence, Thomas (fl. circa 1664) Mercurius Centralis: or, a Discourse of Subterraneal Cockle, Muscle, and Oyster-shels. London: Printed by J[ohn] G[rismond] for J. Collins, and are to be sold at the Angel in Ivie-lane, 1664. First edition, 12mo, one of two variants printed in 1664, the other with R. Royston's name in the imprint, nonetheless inscribed on verso of imprimatur leaf, "ex dono Mr. Royston," rare, one U.S. copy at Folger; the Britwell Court copy, a note by Thomas Thorpe, bookseller, dated 1867, attributing the Royston inscription to the hand of John Milton (who, in 1664, and been blind for some years), bound in 18th century mottled calf, gilt-tooled spine, 4 7/8 x 2 3/4 in. Lawrence tackles one of the questions that vexed many 17th-century scientists, naturalists, and philosophers: how to explain the existence and origin of ancient fossilized shells. Without knowledge of the exact age of the earth, and relying on religious works as the ultimate authority of all things ancient, it was difficult to square the existence of fossils with the biblical stories of creation and the flood.
