ATTRIBUTED TO JOHN BARKER (FL 1819 - D BEFORE 1840) STUDY OF SEASHELLS AND BIRDS` FEATHERS 22 x 30cm, watercolour In his reminiscences to William Chaffers, the painter Solomon Cole recalling his days at Thomas Baxter`s Worcester establishment and subsequently at Flight, Barr & Barr, described John Barker as a landscape painter who also "excelled in painting shells, and was engaged in that part of the celebrated service made for Watson Taylor Esq". No signed pieces by Barker are known, but his shell painting on porcelain may be distinguished from that of Baxter and Samuel Smith. The work of all three is illustrated together, Sandon (J) A Dictionary of Worcester Porcelain 1751-1851, Woodbridge 1993, col plt 76. Although the present watercolour is unsigned, the traditional attribution to Barker is certainly plausible. Minor light stains but in good condition, the pigment still quite fresh and largely unfaded, the work is executed on stout wove paper and there is an old pencil attribution to Barker on the reverse "By John Barker designed for Worcester Porcelain"
