A World War I Military Medal group of four to 2081 Cpl James Henry Amson Royal Engineers, comprising 1914-15 Star named 'Spr J. Amson', with MM named '492017 Cpl J. Amson R.E'., BWM, VM, and bronze death plaque, he died from gas exposure. Accompanied by two typed transcripts for being 'Awarded' and 'rewarded' the MM dated 28th September 1918. His actions were: 'On September 21st 1918 during our attack on the German trenches, near Ronssoy, the enemy put down an intense bombardment on the forward areas which completely broke up our telephone lines. This N.C.O. went along and repaired all forward cables and in one case where 1500 yds had been completely blown out, carried up and relaid new cable under an incessant bombardment of shells and gas and eventually established communication. The cables were continually breaking and he worked on these faults for over thirteen hours with splendid courage and determination.' A pair of George III silver butter shells possibly by Thomas Pitts (II), London, 1808, on three mollusc feet, the ends with double gadroon borders beneath applied shell flanked by foliage, engraved with small crest coronet, 14.7 cm. long, wt. 308 gm.Maker's mark is rubbed though one can read TP on one, one of the applied shells has a small lead repair to tip of foliage beside it on left side and a small repair around the front-most mollusc foot on same dish.
