Breguet et Fils. A fine and very rare 18K gold key wind quarter repeating open face pocket watch with jumping hour handDate: Indistinct London Hallmark for 1797Movement: Matte gilt with typical underslung ruby cylinder escapement, plain 3-arm balance, parachute protection for balance, bi-metallic compensation curve for balance spring, two polished hammers striking on a gongDial: Brushed champagne, secret signature between 12 and 1, hobnail engine turned centre, black Roman numerals, black outer minute divisions with five minute markers, secret signature between 12 and 1, subsidiary constant seconds with wheat sheaf engine turned centre at 3, blued steel Breguet hands, jumping hour handCase: Engine turned round, reeded band, push repeat via stem, cuvette No.1737Signed: Case stamped DD, dial & cuvette signed Size: 57mm Accompaniments: Ratcheted winding keyFootnotes:This Breguet watch contains many of the typical enhancements to Horology that Breguet pioneered and have been adopted (in some fashion) in watchmaking to this day. The very fine underslung ruby cylinder (jewelling the escapement), the famous Parachute spring system to protect the balance (shock resist systems) and the bi-metallic curve for accurate temperature compensation (compensation balances). Incorporated in this watch Breguet came up with a system that allowed the hour hand to remain stationary on the hour marker until the minute hand reached the next hour when it would then jump instantaneously to the next number. A very interesting development that was used for digital displays later but for the traditional dial it was somewhat confusing as at 5 minutes to four the hour hand would still point at 4 rather than be close to 5. There is a story that Napoleon had a watch with this feature and missed an important meeting by misreading his watch. For further information on this lot please visit Bonhams.com
Breguet. A fine and rare 18K gold key wind open face 'Souscription' pocket watchDate: Circa 1822, crisp gold marksMovement: Fire gilt, typical symmetrical placement of wheels, large central barrel, plain 3-arm balance, bi-metallic compensation curb regulator, typical Breguet parachute balance protection system, underslung ruby cylinder, blued steel screws, No.3974Dial: White, black Arabic numerals, secret numbered Breguet signature below 12, single blued handCase: Engine turned, cartouche to back with small engraved monogram, numbered 69 and 3975BSigned: Case stamped LJ, dial & movement signedSize: 60mmFootnotes:After Abraham Louis Breguet returned from exile back to Paris in the 1790's his business was virtually destroyed. He came up with a plan whereby his clients could order a watch paying a down payment and then the balance when the watch was delivered. This founded the business and allowed him to rebuild. These watches were known as 'Souscription' watches and the dial of this watch has a secret scratch signature and is numbered. Each of these watches is in some way unique as each was finished by hand with a certain amount of freedom given to the watchmaker. This is a beautifully made watch of relatively large diameter (60mm), with a single hand and enamel dial, the movement is of great simplicity based around a large central barrel and symmetrical layout to the wheels. To this design Breguet added his special features like the parachute shock resist system and the underslung ruby cylinder which were all his own advances in horology. For further information on this lot please visit Bonhams.com
