A Zoroastrian (Parsi) scene, North India, circa 1900Opaque pigments heightened with gold and silver on paper, depicting a scene of women with base chests drawing water from a well into silver and gold vessels, a bearded figure with a dagger at his waist takes a drink from a gold bowl, two figures below, in a green hilly landscape with building in the distance, panels of Persian text either side, mounted on a gold decorated border of repeating star pattern, the Persian inscriptions with lines from the Nizami Ganjavi’s Treasury of the Mysteries [makhzan al-asrar], in praise of the Prophet Muhammad to border 'How can that destructive stone rejoice?/His locks are day-glowing Virgo/Why did the stone shatter his gem?/His heart makes ruby-red the sun/His sweetness gave not hearty laughter/Both worlds are tied to his saddle-strap,' 28 x 22cm. Condition Report: The edges show some losses. The right corners are scuffed. The left side corners are lacking. The painting is stained and pitted. This is most noticeable to the clearer areas of the work : the sky, the well and some garments. The narrow speckled margins are in good condition. The rectangular calligraphic panels are stained and lightly smudged. As can be seen in the catalogue and website illustrations, the wide borders shows some losses and water staining overall. Their lower edges presents some remnants of dried glue. The reverse is stained and pitted. A remnant of modern brown tape is still attached tot he lower right corner.

Condition - very good, later safety added, unmarked and untested but in our opinion would test as gold, the chain being slightly more yellow in colour than the head and tail parts, no stones missing, clasp function, general wear including some minor wear to links, slightly discolouration to turquoises etc.

Born in Kenya, Roger moved to the UK in 1959 to pursue his teaching career and further studies, earning a Bachelor of Science degree whilst singing in local clubs in Bangor, Wales, and in 1962 he released his first UK record The Charge of the Light Brigade. In the same year he had his breakthrough performance on This and That, a Northern Ireland television show. Roger was known for his hits including The Last Farewell and Durham Town and famous not only for his singing, but his incredible whistling talent showcased in his composition Mexican Whistler, which reached number 1 in three different European countries. Over his career he sold 50 million records across the world and earned over 250 silver, gold, and platinum awards.
