German School (circa 1600)A gilt-metal locket containing eight family portraits. Both covers hinged to reveal two hinged panels painted with portraits, comprising on one side: a Gentleman in a black cap and ermine-collared coat; a Gentleman in black with a small white ruff; a Lady with standing white collar and pearl necklace and a boy in a white doublet with red slashes; the other a Gentleman with a black cap, white fur-collared coat and gold chains; a Lady in a pearl-adorned headdress; two Ladies in matching black dresses with red slashes, one with a pearl necklace, the other with a pearl and ruby necklace. Oil on metal, Oval, 66mm (2 5/8in) highFootnotes:Provenance:with Philip Mould Ltd, London, June 2008The costumes of the sitters date from different periods suggesting that this locket was conceived as an intimate gallery of family portraits spanning three generations, that could have been used by the owner when travelling and away from the life-size portraits from which they were almost certainly based. This lot is subject to the following lot symbols: ** VAT on imported items at a preferential rate of 5% on Hammer Price and the prevailing rate on Buyer's Premium. For further information on this lot please visit Bonhams.com

The original portrait was painted by a follower of George Gower and is displayed at Hatfield House. In 1545, Anne married Henry Carey (1526-1596), son of Sir William Carey and Mary Boleyn, the elder sister of Queen Consort Anne Boleyn. As Carey's mother had once been the mistress of King Henry VIII, there were many at court who speculated that he was in fact, the King's illegitimate son.Carey was created Baron Hunsdon on 13 January 1559 and Anne was styled Baroness Hunsdon. Following her elevation to the rank of a peer's wife, Anne was appointed a Lady of the Privy Chamber to Queen Elizabeth I, who was also her husband's first cousin and held the couple in high regard. When Henry died Elizabeth I paid for his funeral expenses and gave Anne a gift of £400 in addition to an annual pension of £200 from the Exchequer. Shortly before Henry's death, Elizabeth appointed Anne to the office of Keeper of Somerset House, a royal residence where the Queen had lived prior to her accession to the throne. Anne held the post for the remainder of her life.
