MOSHEH OVED: SILVER BIRD RING, CIRCA 1950Modelled as a bird in flight with gilded beak, engraved feathers, and ruby-set eyes, with hammered shank, the underside engraved 'HEATHER' ring size approx. Thence by descent.Mosheh Oved (1885-1958), the charismatic owner of Bloomsbury antique shop, Cameo Corner, was an authority on cameos, antique watches and clocks as well as being a writer, sculptor and poet. Whilst sheltering in the basement of Cameo Corner during the blitz, he modelled the first of his animal ring designs out of wax - a lamb on wobbly legs - in order to steady his trembling hands. Report number 24138, 14 January 2024.Provenance:British crime novelist, Dora Amy Turnbull, formerly Dillon, née Elles (1877-1961), known by her pen name, Patricia Wentworth, and thence by descent.Patricia Wentworth was born in Mussoorie, India and attended Blackheath High School for Girls in South London. Her parents were General Edmond Elles and Lady Clare Elles née Rothney. Patricia had a daughter with her first husband, Lt. Col. George Frederick Horace Dillon (d.1906) and became stepmother to Dillon's three sons, two of whom died during World War I. Wentworth was the middle name of one of her stepsons and Patricia adopted this name as her pen name. In 1920, she married her second husband, Lt. Col. George Oliver Turnbull.Patricia Wentworth wrote a series of thirty-two crime novels, featuring Miss Maud Silver, a retired governess who becomes a private detective in London. Miss Silver works closely with Scotland Yard, especially Inspector Frank Abbott, and is fond of quoting the poet, Tennyson. Miss Silver is sometimes compared to Jane Marple, the beloved detective created by Wentworth's contemporary, Agatha Christie. Wentworth also wrote thirty-four books outside of this genre.
