A Fine French Painted & Ruby & Diamond Set Fan By Jules Donzel, circa 1880. The double sided painted paper fan is decorated to the obverse with allover painted panels of young lovers and putti, signed Mark Bonber? to the right side, above a mother of pearl spine to front and back, decorated with a gold leaf cartouche of putti surrounded by garlands and motifs, with a further painted panel below signed J Donzel, the pierced section of the fan is set with approximately 50 small diamonds and rubies to front and back approximately 100 in total, the larger section of the spine has an enamel panel to the centre decorated with young lovers, the reverse is decorated with a gilt painted crown and crest to the top surrounded by further putti, with allover gilt painted swag panels, Duvelleroy London marked to the lower left, the fan is approximately 27cm high and 54cm wide, enclosed in a glazed double sided table cabinet with Rococco giltwood frame, overall 38cm high, 58cm wide. Jules Donzel was probably the most fashionable 19th century fan painter, his designs were sought by Paris maker Duvelleroy. This fan was possibly made for a Princess or Queen at a Royal wedding. Queen Mary had previously held a similar fan by Donzel at the wedding of Princess Victoria Louise of Prussia and Prince Ernest Augustus of Cumberland in Berlin 1913. Condition report Very minor age stains to paper, all stones are intact, Doesn’t appear to be any missing. Two minor tears to top, age creases to paper at the folds. Signatures are visible and clear. A Burmese Ruby and Diamond Cluster Ring, an oval cut ruby in a claw setting within a border of old cut diamonds, to diamond set ridged shoulders, total estimated diamond weight 0.60 carat approximately, finger size L see illustration The ring is accompanied by a GIA Gemological Report Ruby Origin Report, GIA Report 2175695156, dated July 14th, 2016, stating that the ruby weighs 2.65 carat, geographic origin: Burma (Myanmar), with no indications of heating. The ring is in good to fair condition. The ruby has a surface reaching fracture with associated chip from a crown facet to the edge of the table. The shank has been resized. The ruby measures 9.33mm x 6.71mm x 4.39mm as per the GIA report. The approximate qualities of the diamonds are; colour J/K, clarity SI1/SI2. Gross weight 4.0 grams. An Early 20th Century Onyx, Diamond and Pearl Novelty Bird Brooch, modelled as four swallows, with carved onyx wings, rose cut diamond bodies and ruby set eyes, perched to knife edge bars terminating in groups of pearls, measures 2.5cm by 4.5cm see illustration . The brooch is in good condition, there is one very small rose cut diamond deficient to the head of one of the outer birds. It is not hallmarked or stamped, valued as silver on gold.
