Don Balke (North Carolina, B. 1933) "Bahamas/Ruby Throated Hummingbird" Signed lower right. Original Watercolor on Illustration Board. Provenance: Collection of James A. Helzer (1946-2008), Founder of Unicover Corporation. This painting was originally published on the Fleetwood International Audubon Fund First Day Cover issued March 29, 1989. A subdued humming interrupted by an angry-sounding squeal or chipping noise may signal the presence of the famed rubythroat. The only hummingbird seen over most of the eastern United States, the rubythroat fiercely defends its established territory from aerial intruders. The adult male's bright red bib actually appears black in poor light but takes on a blazing scarlet hue in full sunlight. In courtship the male performs a series of aerial jousts directly in front of his chosen female, who builds the nest, incubates the eggs, and feeds their young with no further assistance from him. Her nest is a tiny inch-deep cup, lined with plant down and lichens and held together with the most delicate spider webs. Situated on a branch 10 to 30 feet high, the female then lays two pea-sized eggs which are a soft white. She feeds her young by thrusting her nectar-laden beak into their outstretched bills. When the downy fledglings try their wings, they are expert fliers almost from the start - darting forward, shifting into reverse, and seemingly hovering at a stand-still over a sweet-smelling flower.
