A mid Victorian gold, sapphire and pearl Renaissance Revival `Matsys` cruciform pendant by Robert Phillips of Cockspur Street, circa 1870, the central cabochon sapphire rub over set between four pearls, the cruciform arms in set all along with cabochon sapphires with gold wire scroll and beaded decoration, with a glazed locket to the reverse, the beadwork decorated pendant loop applied with Robert Phillips entwined double P monogram with Prince of Wales Feathers maker`s mark, 9cm long. See Gere, C. and Rudoe, J., `Jewellery In The Age Of Queen Victoria`, London 2010, p. 353 for an illustration of the same design of cross attributed to John Brogden or Robert Phillips, set with a central ruby rather than a sapphire. The authors attribute the design to John Brogden rather than Robert Phillips, as presumably the illustrated example is unsigned, unlike the lot offered here. The authors explain the naming of the piece as the `Matsys Cross` after a 15th century diptych by Quentin Matsys, in which Christ holds a crown surmounted by a cross of this design.
