A fine Chinese armorial coffee cup and saucer, c.1755, decorated with the arms of Browne, Viscount Montagu quartering six other coats, within a gilt spearhead border, the cup with a small rim chip, 12cm. (2) Provenance: the Clifford Henderson collection. Purchased at Heirloom and Howard in 1993. Formerly in a sale at Christie`s, New York in 1993. This service was probably made for Anthony Browne, 6th Viscount Montagu. A tea service with this armorial is in the collection at Althorpe, home of Earl Spencer.
A Chinese armorial tea canister, c.1758, decorated with the arms of Ligonier, Viscount Ligonier, raised on a reticulated scrolling base, 10cm. Provenance: the Frederick Arthur Crisp collection, Puttick and Simpson, 8th March 1923, lot 210. The Clifford Henderson collection. Illustrated: the Tudor-Craig Catalogue, Heirloom and Howard, 1993. This service was made for the colourful figure of Sir John Louis, Earl Ligonier, who came to England as a refugee in 1698 and had an extensive career with the English Army, culminating with his appointment as Commander-in-Chief throughout the Seven Years War. He was furious when relieved of this post at the age of 86. He had a reputation, at this ripe old age, of maintaining four mistresses at his Surrey home, with a reputed combined age of 47.
A Chinese armorial tea canister and cover, c.1755, each side decorated with the arms of Poley impaling Coffin, the narrower sides with parrots perched on foliate scrolls, the cover surmounted with a gilt lion dog finial, 11.8cm. (2) Provenance: the Clifford Henderson collection. This service was probably made for the grandson of Sir John Poley of Bury. His other ancestor, Sir William Coffin, was Master of the Horse at King Henry VIII`s marriage to Anne Boleyn.
