Plated Tea Service Late 19th century EPNS footed teapot, milk jug and sugar bowl. Elegant fluted lines, marked EPNS to base, A, B & Co, makers mark for ALBERT J. BEARDSHAW & CO. Active at 12 Mulberry St (1863-1866) and 32-35 Victoria St. Sheffield (1867-1951), trading as Beardshaw & Co from 1876
*Campaign Chest. A Victorian Campaign chest belonging to Brigadier-General N.T. Nickalls, the stained oak chest with brass iron straps, the front panel with brass plate engraved N.T. NICKALLS 17TH LANCERS No1, the hinged lid enclosing four lift out trays with divisions for a tea service, condiments, flatware and other table items, lined with green baize and marbled paper, 64cm high x 80.5cm wide x 55.5cm deep, see Lot 973. Brigadier-General Norman T Nickalls (1864-1915), educated at Eton College, served during the Boer War with 17th Lancers and also Tarkastad Mounted Troops, mentioned in despatches 17 January 1902. Nickalls commanded 21st Division K3 New Army formation at the outbreak of WWI and took a brigade into the cauldron of Loos on 25 September 1915. The Brigade diary states that an officer of the West Yorks, Major Bulloch, saw a shell hit near or directly where Nickalls was near the Chalk Pit the next day on the 26th. His body was never found and Nickalls is commemorated on the Loos memorial to the missing. (1)
A VERY ATTRACTIVE FIVE-PIECE SILVER-PLATE TEA AND COFFEE SERVICE, comprising a large tea kettle with scroll handle and domed cover with bird finial, the body with lobed panels and embossed with scrolling foliage on a base with four cabriole legs, with shell feet; together with a matching coffee pot, a teapot, and a sugar and cream. A FINE CIRCULAR SILVER TWO-HANDLED SERVING DISH, with hot water cavity and gadroon edge, with two bead handles, surmounted with a domed lid and dragon handle, crested, 16" (41cm); together with a circular salver, with gadroon edge, 14" (36cm); a three piece silver plated tea service, by James Dixon & Son of Sheffield; and an oval entree dish and cover with Celtic bands, 12" (31cm). A THREE-PIECE INDIAN WHITE METAL TEA SERVICE, comprising an oval teapot with domed and hinged cover, surmounted with Buddha riding a lion, and a lower band with further Buddhas in relief, on oval stem base; together with matching sugar bowl and cream jug; an Indian white metal napkin ring; a pair of similar Indian napkin rings; a three-piece plated condiment set comprising salt, pepper and sugar castor; a plated cocktail shaker; and a plated trophy cup.
