Sima Vassilieva (Russian, born 1954)Family Tree signed in Latin and dated '95' (lower middle)mixed media on wood130 x 70cm (51 3/16 x 27 9/16in).Footnotes:ExhibitedLondon, RTVI Office, 6 Pall Mall East, Sima Vassilieva. Retrospective, 15 - 16 May 2015London, Westminster Reference Library, Sima Vassilieva: Retrospective, 16 - 28 January 2017London, Chelsea Football Club, Stamford Bridge, Arbuzz J-Fest, February 2019Born in Ukraine in 1954, Sima Vassilieva (Slutsker) began painting in 1980s in Moscow. After much controversy created by publication of her painting Russian Banya in the magazine Ogoniok, in 1990, Vassilieva moved to Britain where she continued working in a variety of styles and media. Vassilieva's art is inspired by the traditions of Russian print genre Lubok and blended with the 1970s Sots-Art movement influences, while the central theme of her work is a collective portrait of Soviet people charged with political satire and humour. In 1990s, she created a series of works painted on wooden scoops called 'Sovok,' with an ironic reference to Soviet lifestyle and characters (in Russian, 'Sovok' is a colloquial expression of 'Soviet'). Painted on wood, the offered Family Tree presents a deeply personal lyrical survey of the history of two families, Russian and Jewish, joined together as two trees intertwined by roots and branches. For further information on this lot please visit Bonhams.com

THREE NEWCASTLE UNITED F.C. TEAM PHOTOGRAPHS, dating from 1933-34, 1934-35 and 1936-37, along with a letter from manager of Newcastle United F.C. to James McMenemy dated 1931, and a scrap from the United News and Programme dated 1932 Note: Each of these team photographs includes a young Harry McMenemy, the latest of the three illustrating Harry as Captain of the squad, flanked by Chairman and Vice Chairman of Newcastle United. The letter which accompanies this lot provides a great insight into Harry's strong start with the club, as then manager Andy Cummingham sends news of the young player's debut match to the McMenemy family back in Cambuslang. In strong praise, Cunningham writes 'Your boy Harry made his debut on Saturday for us at Grimsby, and I want to congratulate you now on your lad. He played a delightful game, and was the most unconcerned member of our party. We asked a big thing of him, and he did not fail in his test. I am confident he will do big things in football.'
