Wally Hardinge's England cricket cap and tie. Wally Hardinge (Kent and England) Harold Thomas William Hardinge was born at Greenwich, London, 25th February 1886. He was a stylish right-hand opening bat for Kent, a capable slow left arm orthodox bowler and an athletic fielder. He made his county debut aged 16 and played for Kent for the next 31 seasons, the only interruption being the Great War. Hardinge was named as a Wisden Cricketer of the Year in 1915. He was an integral member of Kent's first four Championships and passed 1000 runs in a season on 18 occasions. In any other era Hardinge would surely have made more than just the one Test appearance v Australia at Leeds in 1921, but was always in the shadow of England's legendary openers Hobbs and Sutcliffe and as well as other able deputies. Hardinge was a double-international, winning a single cap for football. His club sides were Newcastle United, Sheffield United and Arsenal.

The Football Association Community Shield, formerly known as the Charity Shield, was first competed for by Manchester United and Queen's Park Rangers in 1908. The shield directly replaced the Sheriff of London Shield, an annual match between the leading professional and amateur clubs in the gentlemen v players tradition, devised by Sir Thomas Dewar and first played for in 1898 with receipts distributed to hospitals and charities. This medal relates to the very first Shield played on 19th March 1898 between Sheffield United and Corinthians. The match ended as a draw but also in controversy as Sheffield United refused to play extra time in protest against refereeing decisions during the game. The original recipient of this medal is unknown.
