Palmer's Arabic Grammar...'). Words and images relate to sporting activities (mostly football), teachers and learning ('books up to...', 'Trencher caps'), punishments (such as 'funding... a licking on the back with a ground ash', and 'scrubbing... a corporal punishment of 4 cuts'), fagging ('Bread picker', 'Butter washing', 'Turf keeper', 'Tege... any one to whom kindness has been shown... generally a younger boy, when he first becomes befriended by an older'), local place names, and localised slang ('Jubilee...a period when there is nothing to do', 'Joel. Colin Campbell McKechnie Veitch (22 May 1881 – 26 August 1938): The England international caps of Colin Veitch, Captain of Newcastle United in the Glory Days of 1899-1914. A 1907 purple England International Football Cap by A.W. Gamage Ltd., 126-129 Holborn, London; and a 1906 red England Cap by Young & Co., 36 King William Street, London Bridge; and an England jersey badge. Provenance: Given to the vendor's father by Veitch's wife. Exhibitions: The caps were displayed in the St James's History Gallery as well as the Federation Breweries guest room. History: Colin Veitch is one of, if not the, greatest Newcastle United players who ever played. Born in Heaton he proved himself as both an academic as well as a sportsman and although he started as an amateur he soon tuned professional ins 1899, something very few footballers at the time had the opportunity to do. He was described as “a man who is the master of his job”, and scored 49 goals in 322 appearances. For a short spell, Veitch considered giving up his football career to pursue a career in academia, but after a spell in the reserves, playing under the pseudonym of 'Hamilton' he changed his mind. Veitch played for England on six occasions from 1906-1909, what happened to the other dated caps is unknown, if they exist at all. He was also an accomplished playwright, composer, conductor and producer, and counted George Bernard Shaw amongst his circle of friends. He founded the People's Theatre in 1911. Veitch served in France during the First World War as a 2nd Lieutenant in the Royal Garrison Artillery which sadly ended his football carrier. However he was still an active member of the football community as a Union spokesman and an Evening Chronicle Journalist, but he was banned from the press box in 1929, a harsh decision against someone who had done so much for his team. In 1938, Veitch contracted pneumonia and died aged 57 in Bern, Switzerland whilst on a recuperation holiday.

The Major's military career commenced in 1899 when he joined the yeoman cavalry at the start of the Boer War, receiving a commission in the Royal Artillery the following year and serving until 1904, when he retired in favour of agricultural pursuits. During the Boer War Charles saw action at Sand River, Wittebergen, Slaapkrantz, and Bothaville, and was involved in the operations in the Transvaal and Orange River Colony. In his history of the family he describes his experiences of guerilla warfare during which he endured: "constant flank and rear-guard actions, long hours in the saddle, extremities of heat and cold, often sleeping on sodden ground and sometimes for weeks living on nothing but bully-beef and dry biscuits ... ". At the outbreak of the First World War he rejoined the Royal Artillery (Reserve of Officers), and served in the Second Battle of Ypres as Captain, and subesquently commanded the Brigade Ammunition Column before Armentières, Boise Grenier, and Péronne, south of the Somme. In 1916 he was invalided home, although he was later sent to Egypt with the Royal Flying Corps in 1917, and then to the Balkans where he took part in operations, including the two battles of Doiran. Immediately after the Armistice Charles was appointed Commandant of the Royal Air Force of the Alexandria and Aboukir District in Egypt. He therefore served in three branches of the armed forces - the Cavalry, the Artillery and the Air Force. He was awarded a number of medals, including two South African medals, the Victory Medal and the Croix de Guerre, and was also made a Member of the British Empire. Major Charles appears to have been a sporting all-rounder, excelling in football, tennis, golf, rowing, and billiards, as well as polo, skating, skiing and other winter sports. One of the testimonials, dated 1919, describe him as "an excellent officer ... His personal habits are those of an English country gentleman. He is a good sportsman, of almost gigantic proportions, full of physical fitness, and just the sort of Englishman for a Colonial appointment." Charles married and had one daughter, but no son to carry on the family tradition of serving in the Royal Artillery.
