MATTHEWS STANLEY: (1915-2000) English Footballer. An excellent vintage signed Commemorative Cover, the Scot Landy Cover issued the Stanley Matthews Testimonial Farewell match at the Victoria Ground, Stoke on Trent, 28th April 1965. With various post marks, most at Stoke on Trent, 28th April 1965. Signed by Matthews in bold black fountain pen ink with his name alone to a clear area at the head of the cover. Together with Stanley Rous (1895-1986) English Secretary of the Football Association 1934-62 and President of FIFA 1961-74. An interesting T.L.S., Stanley Rous, one page, small oblong 4to, London, 27th May 1965, to Mr. R. Antinoris, on the printed stationery of the President of FIFA. Rous acknowledges safe receipt of 'the cover commemorating Sir Stanley Matthews' farewell game' and thanks his correspondent for their kindness in sending it to him, remarking 'I am very pleased to add this valuable cover to my collection'. The cover features an attractive colour design including images of a football and the Jules Rimet trophy and is postmarked at Wolverhampton, 18th August 1966. Together with Alf Ramsey (1920-1999) English Footballer and Manager of the English national football team 1963-74 with whom he won the World Cup in 1966. ENGLAND FOOTBALL: A blue painted wooden seat back removed from Wembley Stadium, the seat back measuring approximately 16 x 9.5 and with the white painted number 37 at the centre of the top edge, individually signed by the England footballers Geoff Hurst and Martin Peters, both members of England's World Cup winning team of 1966. Both have signed with their names alone in black inks. Attractively mounted and with a pale blue and cream matt featuring four different images from the World Cup final of 1966 and an official printed 8vo certificate of authenticity signed by the Director of Finance of Wembley Stadium and stating, in part, 'the accompanying piece is one of...[the]...original Wembley Stadium seat backs which were removed on Saturday, 6th October 2002. These historic seats were installed in advance of the World Cup finals in 1966 and remained in place for every event up to the stadiums closure in....2000'. Numbered 837 of 2000. Some very light, extremely minor age wear, VG The present menu was signed in the same season that Arsenal won the League Cup under the guidance of manager George Graham in his first season in charge.

CHAPMAN HERBERT: (1878-1934) English Football Manager, famous for his association with Arsenal F.C. from 1925-34. Scarce T.L.S., Herbert Chapman, one page, 4to, Elland Road, Leeds, 18th January 1916, to J. B. Hamilton, on the printed stationery of Leeds City Association Football Club. Chapman writes, in full, 'The enclosed (no longer present) has been addressed to me but unfortunately we disposed of all our spare kit months ago. I have acknowledged receipt and if you can assist them from your funds should feel greatly obliged'. A Leeds City Tramways purple ink received stamp appears above the text and with some pencil and ink annotations, one only very slightly affecting a few words of text but not the signature. Autographs of Chapman are scarce in any form as a result of his untimely death. A few small pinholes to the upper left corner and some light age wear, otherwise VG Chapman managed Leeds City from 1912-18, resigning unexpectedly and without giving any reasons in December 1918. As football resumed in 1919-20, following the end of World War I, Leeds City were accused by a former player of financial irregularities involving illegal payments to guest players during wartime matches. Leeds City were subsequently expelled from the Football League in October 1919 and five club officials, including Chapman, were banned from football for life. The club was dissolved and the Elland Road ground was taken over by the newly formed Leeds United. Chapman appealed against the ban, which was overturned, and he later went on to unprecedented success with Arsenal.
ENGLAND FOOTBALL: An excellent official Football Association pennant (11 x 16.5) presented on the occasion of the 2002 FIFA World Cup Finals in Korea & Japan, 31st May to 30th June 2002, featuring the England emblem with printed text below, and with decorative gold coloured thread and tassles to the edges, individually signed by the complete England football squad of 23 players and their manager, including David Seaman, Ashley Cole, Rio Ferdinand, Sol Campbell, David Beckham, Paul Scholes, Robbie Fowler, Michael Owen, Emile Heskey, Wes Brown, Martin Keown, Gareth Southgate, Teddy Sheringham, Joe Cole, Nicky Butt, Sven -Goran Eriksson etc. All have signed in bold black inks to largely clear areas of the pennant.
