Joe Mercer's Arsenal FC 1948 F.A. Charity Shield winner's medal,14ct. gold, the obverse inscribed FOOTBALL ASSOCIATION, CHARITY SHIELDInterestingly the gold is date stamped for 1939. This is because the medals had been prepared for the 1939 F.A. Charity Shield which was cancelled on the outbreak of the Second World War. Joe Mercer would have probably played in the 1939 match as he was a member of the Everton 1938-39 Football League Division One Champions who were set to play the F.A. Cup winners Portsmouth. In the end Mercer was awarded the medal nine years later but while playing in the red & white of Arsenal who beat Manchester United 4-3.Exhibited:Arsenal FC Museum (on loan).

On a terribly heavy Wembley pitch, City defeated West Bromwich Albion 2-1 coming from behind after a Jeff Astle 5th minute opener. The City goals were scored by Mike Doyle & Glyn Pardoe.

Scottish Football League v The Football League representative medal awarded to James Mason of Third Lanark FC in season 1949-50,9ct. gold, inscribed S.F.L. v F.L., casedThis match was played at Ayresome Park, Middlesbrough. The Scottish League were defeated 3-1 by the hosts.Jimmy Mason was a stalwart of the St Mirren team making a total of 207 League appearances for the club either side of the Second World War between 1936 and 1952. The inside forward represented the Scottish F.L. seven times and also won seven Scotland international caps.

Cup Final Newcastle United defeated Manchester City 3-1. The United goals were scored by Milburn, Mitchell & Hannah, with Johnstone striking for City on the stroke of half-time which at the time had drawn the clubs level.
