Lot 79

Manchester United: An original Red Star Belgrade (Crvena zvezda) versus Manchester United, European Cup football programme, dated February 5th 1958, the day before the Munich Air Disaster. The cover has some staining to the left side, staples appear in good order. Please assess photographs. Additional Information: Of the eleven players listed in the programme team sheet, five sadly lost their life in the Munich Air Disaster. In total, there were 44 people on board the flight returning home from Belgrade following the game. There were 23 total fatalities, twenty of which were confirmed at the scene.

A pair of black, white and red Adidas Predator football boots, with both heels numbered '7' and both tongues stitched 'Beck's'. New York Cosmos: A New York Cosmos, match worn, 1977, white home shirt with green collar, short-sleeves. Worn by Carlos Alberto, Number 5, for the duration of the 1977 season. The shirt manufactured by Umbro, label attached within collar. Stitched number 5 to the front, with printed Cosmos badge, stitched name and number to the reverse 'C. Alberto 5'. It is unknown how many games this shirt was worn in. Very good condition. Please assess photographs.  Additional Information: Carlos Alberto (1944-2016) is considered one of the best defenders of all-time. Alberto captained the 'Selecao' in the triumphant 1970 World Cup, scoring in the final. Most known for his career with the national side, he played club football for Fluminense, Santos, Botafogo, Flamengo, New York Cosmos and California Surf before a 20 year coaching career between 1983 and 2005. Provenance: Originally sold at Olivier Coutau-Begarie Auctions, Lot 978, June 3rd 2016.

Leeds United: A Leeds United, 1965 Football Association Cup Final tracksuit top, believed to have been worn by Billy Bremner for the walkout of the 1965 F.A. Cup Final against Liverpool. Liverpool won the final 2-1 with Billy Bremner scoring the only Leeds United goal. Manufactured by Umbro, Size M. Stitched badge to the front, with stitched Leeds United text to the reverse. Some staining to jacket, but generally in good order. Label inside collar has a faded 'WB' in biro. Please assess photographs.  Additional Information: William Bremner (1942-1997) was a former Scottish midfielder, famed for his 16 year service at Leeds United, where he made near 600 appearances for the club. He also appeared 54 times for Scotland between 1965 and 1975. Bremner won the First Division with Leeds as well as the F.A. Cup, Football League Cup and Charity Shield. Provenance: The jacket was originally purchased from a charity auction which Bremner donated the jacket to. The successful bidder was presented the jacket by Bremner, and was eventually sold to the current vendor.

Lot 1

England: An England, World Cup 1966, match worn shirt, Sir Bobby Charlton, Number 9. Worn in the 1966 World Cup Semi-Final against Portugal. The white No. 9 shirt, with crew-neck collar and embroidered cloth badge, is signed by Charlton, 'To Bill, Best Wishes, Bobby Charlton'. The shirt is slightly stained.  Information: The game between England and Portugal was played on 26th July 1966 at Wembley Stadium, which England won 2-1. Sir Bobby scored both goals in a famous victory that sent England to the World Cup Final to play West Germany four days later. The game was attended by 94,493 spectators, and was originally scheduled to be played at Goodison Park, home of Everton, before being moved to the Empire Stadium, Wembley. England took a two goal lead, with the aforementioned Charlton scoring both, before Eusebio scored from the penalty spot with a few minutes remaining. Provenance: The shirt was originally donated by Sir Bobby Charlton to raise funds for a charity after the 1966 World Cup. Charlton autographed it and personally dedicated to the successful bidder after the auction, and confirmed at the time of the auction that he did wear this shirt in the game against Portugal. Sold at Christie's Football Memorabilia Auction, Lot 542, 30th March 2000.

Football: A hallmarked silver cigarette box, presented to Billy Wright, the lid bearing inscription: Presented by The Anglo-American Sporting Club to Billy Wright C.B.E. Former Captain of England and Wolverhampton Wanderers for his contribution to Soccer, Hotel Piccadilly Manchester, Tuesday 20th August 1968. Measuring approx. 17cm x 12cm, hallmarked Padgett & Braham, London, 1967. Gross weight approx. 528g; together with a gilt-metal medallion inscribed 'The State Express Challenge, Billy Wright', in original fitted case.  Provenance: The items were originally part of the Billy Wright Collection, and then sold at Sotheby's Football Memorabilia Auction, 17th May 2002, Lot 162.

Leeds United: A white match-worn Leeds United shirt, 1966, with crew-neck collar, long-sleeves, stained and holed, the front bearing twenty-three signatures of squad members to include: Barrie Wright, Jack Charlton, Willie Bell, Paul Reaney, Albert Johanneson, John Giles, Paul Madeley, Terry Cooper, Billy Bremner, Norman Hunter and others. The shirt was worn by Albert Johanneson, but it is unknown which game the shirt was worn in. Umbro, Size 40. A rare piece of Leeds United memorabilia. Please assess photographs. Additional Information: Albert Johanneson (1940-1995) was a South African professional footballer, who was one of the first high-profile footballers of African heritage to play in the top flight of English football, and the first black Football Association Cup Final player, who played in the 1965 Final against Liverpool. Johanneson went on to make over 150 appearances for Leeds United in his career. Provenance: Previously sold at Christie's Football Memorabilia Auction, 24th March 2004, Lot 95.

England: An England v. West Germany, World Cup 1990, 4th July 1990, match issued white England shirt. Issued to Steve McMahon for the Semi-Final against West Germany. The shirt was swapped with a West German player after the game (player unknown). Manufactured by Umbro, Size 97-102cm. Number 16 printed to the reverse. Very good condition. Please assess photographs.  Additional Information: Steve McMahon (1961-) is a former English midfielder who played club football for Everton, Aston Villa, Liverpool, Manchester City and Swindon Town. McMahon made 17 England appearances, and played 255 minutes in the 1990 World Cup Finals. He was an unused substitute in the Semi-Final against West Germany.

England: An England v. Morocco, World Cup 1986 Mexico, 6th June 1986, match issued white home shirt. Issued to Peter Beardsley for the Group Stage fixture against Morocco. Manufactured by Umbro. Umbro badge and England badge stitched to the front, alongside 'FIFA World Cup Mexico '86'. Number 20 stitched to the reverse. Signed by Bobby Robson and Peter Beardsley. Stain to either side next to stitching, and on sleeve. Otherwise good condition. Please assess photographs. Additional Information: Peter Beardsley (1961-) is a former English forward who played club football for many clubs, most notably for Carlisle United, Newcastle United, and Liverpool. Beardsley made 59 appearances for the England Senior Team between 1986 and 1996, scoring nine goals. He was an unused substitute against Morocco. Provenance: The shirt was originally donated to a charity auction by Beardsley. It was purchased by a collector who asked Beardsley and Bobby Robson to sign the shirt. Through another purchase and sale, it was then brought by the current vendor.
