William Gaunt (1900-1980) Princes Square Whitecha William Gaunt (1900-1980) Princes Square Whitechapel pen and black ink with blue and green ink wash signed and inscribed at lower right hinged into mount this erroneously captioned Queens Square Whitechapel 1932 21.5 x 25 cm (8 1/2 x 9 3/4 in) *** Princes Square now known as Swedenborg Gardens London E1 was the site of the Ulrika Eleanora Church attended by the philosopher and visionary Emanuel Swedenborg after he arrived in London from Stockholm in 1710. The church closed in 1910 and was demolished in 1921. This stark scene depicts figures playing football by a lone floodlight in the barren looking central garden.

Football - BRISTOL ROVERS (Jesse Whatley). A real photographic portrait postcard, titled `Jesse Whatley / "Benefit Souvenir" 1925`, by H.M. Veale of Bristol. Note: Jesse Winter Whatley (1895-1982), known as `Gentleman Jess`, was a goalkeeper who began playing competitively whilst in the British Army. After the First World War (where he served in the Wiltshire Regiment) he joined Trowbridge Town, but after just two months he was signed for Bristol Rovers, with whom he spent his entire professional career. Between 1922 and 1928 he played in 246 consecutive League games - a record that stood until 1953. He retired from professional football in 1930, yet continued to play at a local non-League level for a further two years, before briefly going into coaching, and then settling on a farm at Westerleigh (Glos.).

A signed club shirt, by Adidas, size 42/44", numbered `20`, named `Bjornebye`, and with ink signature to upper right chest area, framed and glazed in a double-sided frame, overall 75cm x 64cm. Note: Stig Inge Bjornebye (B.1969) was a Norwegian left-back who played for Strommen (1987-88), Kongsvinger (1989-92), Rosenborg (1992), Liverpool (1992-2000), and Blackburn Rovers (2000-03), before a training ground accident brought his playing career to a premature end. He was part of the Liverpool team that won the League (Coca-Cola) Cup in 1994-95, and picked up a second winner`s medal when Blackburn triumphed in the League (Worthington) Cup in 2001-02.
