Arthur Berry, son of Edwin, a Liverpool F.C. director and chairman (1904-09), was born in Liverpool on 3rd January 1888 and educated at Denstone College where he captained the rugby XV. On going to Wadham College, Oxford, he concentrated on football with extraordinary success. He won blues in 1908 and 1909 and at the 1908 Olympic Games was described as ‘the only English forward to play at all consistently well’. Berry was one of just two Great Britain players who achieved the Olympic football gold medal double of 1908 (London) and 1912 (Stockholm), the other being Vivian Woodward. Although an amateur he did win one full international England cap in 1909, while still at Oxford University. Berry won 32 England caps at Amateur level. His club sides comprised Fulham, Everton and Oxford City with whom he played in the F.A. Amateur Cup final. He retired from football in 1913 on being called to the bar, and after service in the First World War returned to Liverpool to join the family law firm. He died in Liverpool on 15th March 1953.

Figueroa Uruguay Voor Voetbal, signed by the president of the Dutch Olympic Committee and the president of the International Olympic Committee, and set with an official seal in the form of a commemorative medal, framed overall 81.5 by 62 cm., 32 by 24 1/2 in.; sold with a related newspaper article, taped to the backboard (2). Roberto Figueroa played for Wanderers F.C. and was a goalkeeper.

An 18ct. gold and enamel lapel badge presented by the Uruguayan government to the 1928 Olympic gold medal winning footballer Adhemar Canavesi, named to Canavesi on the reverse; sold with a photocopy of the magazine Mundo Uruguayo 16th August 1928 with a feature on the Governmental presentation of these medals, including an illustration of the medal, and photographs taken at the ceremony (2). Adhemar Canavesi was the vice-captain of the 1928 gold medal winning Olympic team. He played his domestic football for Bella Vista and Penarol.

A 1922 presentation rugby ball, applied with a silver metal plaque engraved Presented to James Sullivan by the Directors of the Wigan Football Club Ld. as a Mark of Appreciation and in Commemoration of his Kicking 100 Goals during his First Season of Northern Union Football 1921-22. Sullivan sent notice of his scoring talent by kicking five goals on his Wigan debut (at Central Park v Widnes on 27 August 1921, at the age of seventeen). He went on to kick a century of goals every season until the outbreak of the Second World War, an incredible nineteen consecutive seasons.

Four rugby caps won by Fred Jowett, a red Wales international cap dated 1903; a maroon British Isles Australian Rugby Football Tour cap with a wirework kangaroo and dated 1904; a maroon, blue & green rugby league cap with emblematic symbols of Wales, Scotland and Ireland and dated 1905-6; and a blue Swansea RFC cap dated 1901-2. William Frederick Jowett was born at Swansea on 1st July 1879. His one international appearance for Wales was in the England match in 1903. He also made one appearance on the British Isles tour of 1904. Jowett, a winger, was a prolific try scorer and his 42 tries for Swansea in season 1902-03 still remains an all-time club record. He was a member of Swansea’s celebrated ‘invincibles’ team of 1904-05. He later went ‘north’ to turn professional and scored on his debut for Hull KR on 23rd September 1905. Fred Jowett died at Clydach 5th October 1939.

Lot 1

A Glasgow Charity Cup winner’s medal season 1877-78, inscribed GLASGOW CHARITY CUP, J.T. RICHMOND, QUEEN’S PARK F.C. James Tassie Richmond was born at Anderston, Glasgow, on 22nd March 1858. The forward joined the famous amateur club Queen’s Park in 1877 and won three Scotland international caps the first at the age of 19. As well as winning the Glasgow Charity Cup, Richmond gained Scottish Cup winner’s medals in 1880 and 1882. He was also a keen rugby player and eventually gave up football to concentrate exclusively on the oval ball game. He died on 13th January 1898.

Lot 2

William Bassett’s purple England v Scotland international cap 1889-1896, an early and unusual England cap with multiple year and season inscriptions in gold wire work, 90-91, 92-93 & 94-95, with the peak bearing what appears to be a summary 1889-1896. William Bassett played in each of the eight annual England v Scotland international fixtures between seasons 1888-89 and 1895-96. The West Bromwich Albion player won a total of 16 England caps altogether, a very good tally for the period, mainly due to the fact that he was peerless as an outside right where he was renowned for hugging the touch line, beating defenders and delivering pinpoint centres. Billy Bassett also won two F.A. Cup winner’s medals with WBA. William Isiah Bassett was born at West Bromwich 27th January 1869. Billy was involved in football and cricket in the West Bromwich Albion throughout his days. He was chairman of West Brom from 1908 till his death in 1937, and was also a FA Council member from 1930 and an important administrator on the Football League Management Committee for the same period.

A group of six medals won by William Love of Third Lanark Royal Volunteers, comprising a 9ct. gold Glasgow F.A. Challenge Cup winner’s medal for 1891; a 9ct. gold & enamel Glasgow Charity Cup winner’s medal for 1890, a gold Edinburgh International Exhibition Football Contest medal dated 1890; and three other medals, two in gold the other in silver, for the Renfrewshire F.A. Victoria Cup 1897-98, the Ambulance Challenge Cup in 1895 and another dated 1889 for St. B. F.C. William Love was the centre-half for Third Lanark Royal Volunteers F.C. The Volunteers were one of the original sixteen teams that took part in the inaugural Scottish F.A. Cup. in 1873. They were the forerunners of The Third Lanark F.C. who became founder members of the Scottish League in 1890-91.

Lot 9

A 15ct. gold and enamel Championship medal from the very first season of Scottish League Football in 1890-91, the obverse inscribed Scottish Football League, the reverse inscribed Rangers F.C., 1890-91, Joint Champions, Hugh McCreadie. Scottish Football League held its inaugural meeting on 30th September 1890, with the first match taking place on 16th August 1890. After playing 18 games Rangers F.C. and Dumbarton F.C. were tied on 29 points each. A play-off was ordered to decide the winners of the first Scottish Football League Championship, the game being held at Cathkin Park on 21st May 1891 before 10,000 spectators. Rangers went in at the interval ahead but Dumbarton staged a revival in the second half and thanks to a late goal the match ended 2-2. The Scottish League decided then to declare Rangers and Dumbarton as Joint Champions. Had goal difference then been a deciding factor, Dumbarton would have been awarded the Championship, having scored 61 goals to Rangers’ 58.

A 9ct. gold Football League Division One Champion’s medal 1919-20, inscribed THE FOOTBALL LEAGUE, CHAMPIONS, DIVISION 1, 1919-20, D.G. NURSE, DIRECTOR, and in enamel WEST BROMWICH ALBION FOOTBALL CLUB. 1919-20 was the season that the Football League resumed after the First World War. The Football League introduced a new design of medals in this season and one that was to endure until relatively recent times.

A 9ct. gold and enamel Football League representative medal season 1901-02, inscribed THE FOOTBALL LEAGUE, ENGLAND V IRELAND, W. WOOLDRIDGE, 1901. This Inter-League match took place at the Manor Ground, Plumstead, on 9th November 1901 before 12000 spectators. The Football League defeated the Irish League 9-0 with Wolverhampton Wanderers’s Woolridge scoring a hat-trick.

Three representative football caps awarded to Stan Fazackerley, comprising a black and gold cap inscribed BOSTON LEAGUE, 1911; a maroon cap inscribed S & H C F A, 1913-14; and a blue cap inscribed S & H C F A, 1920-21 (3). Stan Fazackerley’s place in football history was secured in 1920 when he was transferred from Sheffield United to Everton for a then record fee of £4000. Fazackerley was also a F.A. Cup winner with Sheffield United in 1915 and won a Division Three (north) Champions medal with Wolverhampton Wanderers in 1923-24. Having started his career at Accrington Stanley, he also had spells with Hull City, Kidderminster Harriers and Derby County.

A 9ct. gold Glasgow Football Association Cup winner’s medal 1915, in original case of issue also inscribed GLASGOW FOOTBALL ASSOC., 1915. The 1915 Glasgow Cup was won by Clyde who beat Partick Thistle 1-0 in a replay following a 1-1 draw. The name of the recipient was never engraved on the medal.

A 9ct. gold F.A. Charity Shield medal 1920, inscribed FOOTBALL ASSOCIATION CHARITY SHIELD. The reverse of this medal was never engraved with the details of the recipient. The gold is hallmarked 1920. In this year West Bromwich Albion defeated Tottenham Hotspur 2-0.

Tom Whittaker’s purple & red Football Association 1925 Tour of Australia cap, embroidered F.A., ENGLAND, AUSTRALIA, 1925. This was the first-ever F.A. Tour of Australia and took place between 7th May and 3rd August. England won all 25 matches scoring 138 goals and conceding just 13. However, the tour proved disastrous for Arsenal’s Tom Whittaker who sustained a career-ending injury when he broke a knee cap. Through his injury Whittaker developed an interest in physiotherapy and fitness training which he implemented as first team trainer at Highbury under Herbert Chapman and played a vital role in the successes achieved at Highbury. Whittaker was also a trainer to the England team and became Arsenal manager in 1947. The club won two Championships and a F.A.
